Teaching Environmental Science I
Dr. Eunice Hefty and Buddy Stanley
DAY 1
The morning sessions were conducted by Buddy Stanley, Regional Director for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Region 14, Dr. Eunice Hefty, Education Coordinator for TCEQ and Dr. Denise Hill, instructor of the course.

Mr. Stanley provided us with a brief overview of the agency's organization and the duties of his office.

We learned that TCEQ is comprised of sixteen regional offices throughout the state.  The Corpus Christi regional office covers the Aransas, Bee, Calhoun, De Witt, Goliad, Gonzalez, Jackson, Jim Wells, Kleberg, Lavaca, Live Oak, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio and Victoria counties.

Some of the duties of Mr. Stanley's office include permit investigations, air monitoring sites, surface water quality monitoring, monitoring of stormwater, wastewater and petroleum storage tanks, emergency response abilities, and many others.

Dr. Eunice Hefty provided a brief overview of the Teaching Environmental Science courses that are taking place across Texas.  We learned that there are a total of nineteen universities throughout the state that offer this course.  Of these there are only three that offer two sections of it, TAMUCC is one of these.   We also learned that this is the 10th year that this course has been offered at our campus.

Dr. Denise Hill then introduced the course expectations and assignments.  Our group is truly excited about being able to work on this website for our assignment.

Our presenters for the day were Gene Blacklock from the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program, and Beth Hoekje "The Bird Lady" from KEDT.

Gene Blacklock made a presentation on the importance of birds.  He made great connections between technology development and adaptations of birds.

Beth's presentation focused on the types of birds in the Coastal Bend area.  She provided a list of great resources for birding.
