| Empty She approached me more out of curiosity than of desire Stepped tall in class from head to toe Her green eyes held a clever disguise She surveyed me more than she wanted me to know Asking me if this seat was taken My only reply could be no, have a seat Not really wanting any company I watched her in the mirror behind the bar At a distance of about six feet The barkeep came over, asked what shed like to drink She replied comfort and coke, as she took out a smoke While still looking at me, the barkeep gave me a wink Can I have a light? She asked sure as a gentleman I Struck the lighters flint like a waiter in a fancy restaurant She said thank you as I said, welcome She smiled with a silk smile I did not want As the conversation pressed on, mainly her being the one To ask questions all about me and my life She somewhat bluntly stated when the third drink was done I see no ring, but Ill bet you have a wife No not anymore, "just two exs" I heard myself say "One a wife of twenty two years, the other a girlfriend-fiance That stole my heart away" She pressed on and on asking questions and giving opinions I said, look, you dont want to get mixed up with the likes of me For Im a rambler, a gambler, and dead inside Do yourself a favor, finish your drink, and then just let me be I ordered another glass of Jack black love on the rocks As I began to swallow it down She leaned over close and whispered in my ear Lover, you cannot drown her memory away I said, you may be right I fear For Ive been trying, for five months to this day With a kiss on the cheek, she said "come with me I will make you forget, I can ease your pain For Im built for comfort and I got coke Why we will howl at the moon, dance to a tune Youll feel better, honey, you just wait and see" I said Im deeply flattered, not that it mattered But Sunshine drank comfort and coke too you see I have to go As I stepped, slow I downed my drink I searched her face for you, but there was no trace I left, with my glass, like my insidesempty Copyright 2001 Dennis Hicks All Rights Reserved by Author |
