The Days of Living on Grand

Beatles playing in one room, Hank Williams in the next
Ahh the days of living on Grand
Jimmy at Nestle, Connie on the phone, Ronnie at the bakery
Mom in the kitchen, frying chicken in the pan
Ahh the days of living on Grand

Dad gets home at five, been at the tar plant all day
Sister and girlfriend talk of Dippity do
While I eavesdrop on her conversation
Listening to all she had to say
Ahh the days of living on Grand

To the south theres the steel mill
To the west, Curts greasy spoon
I close my eyes even today
I can still smell the cooking permeating the room
Ahh the days of living on Grand

The dog getting excited tells me its almost five
That usually means he sees Dads car
That my Dad will soon arrive
Ahh the days of living on Grand

So simple was the life, in this space in time
Didnt have much, and we expected less
Life on Grand was just fine
Ahh the days of living on Grand

My brothers and sister had seen hard times
From Advance to Kaseberg park they had been through
And on to their own life they were about to embark
The whole family would be moving off Grand somewhere anew
Ahh the days of living on Grand

Jimmy got married, Ronnie went off to war in Vietnam
The family would soon be put to the test
God would call Connie to be with him
Its taken me forty one years to this day to understand, this I must confess
Ahh the days of living on Grand

My thoughts drift back to these times, almost daily I think of life on Grand
Its like sand passing through the hourglass, releasing slowly
Part of Gods master plan

After many years of lifes paths, loves emotions, letters written and never sent,
Memories of life on Grand will forever be,
Etched in my mind, carved in my heart,
Ahh the days of living on Grand for me

Mother Of My Child

I don't need to write your name down here
for you know who you are,
the mother of my child on loan from God,
our hearts hold him dear

A special place in my heart,
is occupied by you
this space yours and yours alone
always forever unchallenged and true

No words on paper
will ever make any person see
how much this space is yours
how much you've meant to me

For your the Mother of my child
this will never change
I Loved you long before
his life God chose to arrange

He is us joined into one
our brightest star in the sky
our goodest of good on loan from God
the best to come ,from you and I

And here on this paper,
with these words I wanted you to know
How much I Loved you, and say Thank You
Mother of my child, I love you so

Dad I have some questions
By
Dennis Hicks

"Dad, will you teach me about Love someday"?

"Yes, I'll try my best to son, although I may not be the best teacher,"
"Dad, will you explain about God to me"?
"Yes I'll try to son, but it's better left to the preacher",

"
Dad, tell me about wisdom, is it as hard to learn as they say "?,
"Well son, wisdom is something you acquire, along lifes pathway"

"Dad, will you teach me honesty, and the difference between right and wrong"?
"Yes I'll try my best son, as those answers too
are part of Gods song"

"Dad, where does the wind come from, and how do I know it's there, I cannot see it, no matter how hard I stare"?
"Well son it also comes from above, like faith itself, you have to believe and know it's there"

"
Dad, will you teach me how to forgive, does that too come from above"?
"Yes son, yes it does, it's brought us back to the original question ,
as I honestly believe and my wisdom says I'm right
that I have an obligation my son
to teach you Love"
