| I did this one in the spring, I think it's a fair example of my work. I also used this as a cover for my first demo CD~ |
| I like most of my paintings and drawings to convey a sense of a story. Even if they don't have a written part to them, I think that all that's needed to spark the imagination is just a little nudge. I have illustrated a few children's stories, and I thought all three of them conveyed the images really well without illustrations. So when I did illustrate them, I tried not to dictate every detail in terms of imagination (though I think that every so often it's good to give their imaginations a little jump start). A lot of kids will just come up with the images on their own, and probably one of the most important skills to have as a writer is to be able to facilitate that. I'm not saying that illustrations are always fluff to mask over the author's inability...but rather that they give the story a certain feel. What would Maurice Sendaks books be without their illutrations? In fact, I have wondered whether or not he goes about writing books the same way I go about writing my own stories...I usually start with the pictures, and then try to build the story up around them.
