Smart Growth Projects/U District
Smart Growth represents a response to poor urban form and decades of urban design for the auto instead of humans within our cities. Smart Growth principles represent a critical direction and focus of the Environmental Protection Agency. Smart Growth is a framework for supporting economic revitalization and redevelopment of the University District near downtown Spokane, Washington. The City of Spokane was one of four recipients of Smart Growth Planning Grants nationally to conduct a charrette using EPA consultants to promote the implementation of Smart Growth Principles.

The Spokane University District concept was developed through a partnership of the City of Spokane, the four University Partners in the Riverpoint Campus--Washington State University, Eastern Washington University, Gonzaga University, and the Community Colleges of Spokane. The City's web site documents the Strategic Master Plan developed for the project.
