how-to collect and filter

1 - Ask every place with a fryer near you if they want "free fryer grease removal."  Then tell them to give it to you in the original jugs it came in.  Do not accept anything but fryer oil - no water, no soap, and no grease-trap material.  It should look like maple syrup.  This will give you a lot of 4.5-gallon jugs filled with used fryer grease.  Let them sit for at least two days and most of the large particles will settle out. 

2 - Purchase some large filter bags from McMaster.com that are rated to filter down to at least 5-micron.  These filter bags need to have a handle so you can hang them from something sturdy.  I got the large ones from mcmaster.com (Item # 51595K71 - Polypropylene Felt - 1 Micron, 8-1/4" Dia X 34" Length).  These hold more than one full cube of WVO (about 5 gallons) and have worked great even after a few hundred gallons of WVO.  

3 - Get a metal 55-gallon drum, cut holes in the lid and hang the filter bags in the lid so that the bags cant fall into the drum.

4 - Pour your settled fryer grease into the filter bag (do not pour the last couple of inches, where all the particles have settled).

5 - Get a pump and connect it to the bottom of your drum about 6-8" off of the bottom of the drum and this is where the oil will be sucked from, which will leave the settled particles and water below.  On the outlet of the pump, use black steel (not galvanized) to mount a fuel filter

6 - install a kink free hose fuel transfer hose on the outlet of the fuel polishing filter, and get a 3/4" black steel cap to seal it when not in use.

As you can see, I store my setup next to my driveway in a plastic shed.  It locks up and is weather-proof.
