| SAMUEL TERRY Samuel Terry, son of William and Charlotte (Clark) Terry, was born in England about 1841. You may read of Samuel's parents at the following site. TERRY. He is found in the ship's passenger list, American Eagle, in 1848-9 as the family journeyed to America. He is listed as age 8 in the Milwaukee WI census of 1850, "in school". In 1860 census of Macon County IL, Samuel is shown to be 18 years of age. A record of land sales in Illinois lists Samuel Terry as purchaser of 40 acres in Macon County, near Decatur, IL. |

Between 1860 and 1872, Samuel was probably married for the first time. A later census record shows that he was married twice, and Nannie Miller was the second wife. Family letters say that Samuel and his mother, Charlotte, and sister, Amelia, moved from Illinois to Montgomery County KS in about 1872. There is an early KS map which shows property owners, including Samuel Terry. According to Montgomery Co KS Marriages, Samuel Terry, 28, of Sycamore married Nannie Miller, age 20, signed by William Griffin J.P. [Justice of the Peace] and Samuel Terry. They were married at Radical City, 24 Dec 1872. She was daughter of John J. Miller and Diana M. Harris, and sister of Sarah and John W. Miller who originally came from West Virginia with the Griffin family. [William Griffin was father of Samuel Young Griffin, who married Lizzie Terry.] |
