ROSLYN LEVENSTEIN, was known to the CMT community as "Roz" or "WriterRoz" on the CMT lists. Her cheerfulness and lively manner made her a person everyone enjoyed.
She passed away quietly on November 6, 2001, at the age of 81. Her career in advertising on a global scale, was demonstrated to us frequently, by her skill with slogans that she loved to share. Her hobbies included attending the theater and travelling. She always seemed to be able to bring a smile to people's faces, with her optimistic view of life. Her son Leland, his wife, the friends she made throughout her life and our CMT Community will all treasure the memories she left.
Roz was a very active member of CMT International, meeting other CMTers on the email list associated with "CMTI". Her support of research into CMT was well known. When the email list "CMT Support" was started by Lamar, she became one of the first CMTers to join. She was still an active member of both email groups and CMT International when she died.
Many years ago she had worked in England, where she became famous for her slogan "I'm only here for the beer" . This slogan had nothing to do with alcohol, but was intended as a way of looking at life. A recurring slogan of Roz's we all remember was "the three G's": "Get Up! Get Dressed! Get Out! " which was designed to remind CMTers to keep active. Roz was unwavering in her belief that exercise, both mental and physical, was necessary for overall health, especially when one has CMT. She worked with a trainer for half an hour, twice a week for many years to keep her body in top physical condition, and recommended this to every CMTer she met. She frequently repeated: "use it or lose it".
Roz had been diagnosed with CMT Type 2 in her mid-sixties, which was unusually late in life. Her CMT appeared to be slowly progressive, but her hands were becoming involved in her last few years of life. She used a four-wheeled cart to push around the house that simulated a walker. She continued to drive her Saturn to the end and kept a "travelmate" in her car for use outside.
Roz was a unique person whom we will not soon forget. She said that at her age she could say anything that came to her mind on the internet, because there was no point in hiding anything anymore. She readily admitted her dislike of housework and cooking, to the extent that she hired a chef to cook for her. She regularly had new ideas for all CMTers, to help them cope with their disease. She was a supreme example of living life in spite of her CMT.
Lamar Stephenson on hearing of Roz's death said : "and now a message for Roz,
"I'm up, I'm dressed, and I will be getting out." We loved you."
