My Joseph is first found on the 1850 census of Lauderdale County, AL in the home of his mother, as a 23-year old, born in Alabama. His mother died in 1853, and his older brother Levi, administrator of the estate, told the court his brother Joseph was living in Mississippi County, Arkansas, (Lauderdale Co, AL Minutes Probate Ct. Bk. B, p. 89) along with brothers Washington, Andrew Jackson, David Crockett, and LaFayette 'Marcus' Gist.
Craighead County Arkansas was formed from Mississippi County in 1859, and I can't find Joseph or brothers Washington, Andrew J., or David C. anywhere. Youngest brother Lafayette Gist is found across the state line in Dunklin County, Missouri as Guess, Lafayett 18 b. AL, and his 22 year old wife Martha [W. Hollis, his 1st cousin].
I next find Joseph in 1870:
1870 Craighead Co, AR Federal Census (near Bowman) Joseph Guest 46 Alabama farmer 650 Matilda A. 26 Tenn. cannot read/write Martha I. 9 Ark. John M.D.S. 3 Ark. <--(Joseph Marcus Cordelia deLafayette Gist, my gg gf) William M.D. 9/12 Ark.
I do not know the identity of Matilda at this time, right now I am assuming she is the mother of these children. I don't find Joseph b. 1827 again, anywhere...
His son, Joseph Marcus Gist next appears on the 1900/1910 census of Dunklin County, Missouri. Many relatives [descendants of his uncle Levi and uncle James C. Gist] had migrated to Dunklin County shortly after the Civil War.
Joseph Gist b. 1827 is a direct descendant of Christopher Gist according to Christopher Gist of Maryland and Some of His Descendants, by Jean Muir Dorsey and Maxwell J. Dorsey, and appears on p. 76. 1 Christopher GIST [? - 1690] ENG>MD .. +Edith CROMWELL [? - 1694] ENG>MD ..... 2 Richard GIST [1683 - 1741] MD ......... +Zipporah MURRAY [1685 - 1761] MD ............ 3 Nathaniel GIST [1707 - aft. 1787] MD>VA>NC>TN>? ................ +Mary HOWARD [1714? - Unknown] ................... 4 Joseph GIST [1748 - aft. 1813] NC>TN? ....................... +Ann Or Mary MCNEILL [? - aft. 1793?] .......................... 5 Joseph GIST [1789 - 1846] NC>TN>AL .............................. +Sinia HOLLIS [1800 - 1853] ................................. 6 Joseph GIST [1827 - aft. 1870] AL>AR>MO?
