DILEMMA
Whatever we do, whether we light strangers' cigarettes--it may turn out to be a detective wanting to know who is free with a light on a lonely street nights--or whether we turn away and get a knife planted between our shoulders for our discourtesy; whatever we do--whether we marry for love and wake up to find love is a task, or whether for convenience, to find love must be won over or we are  desperate--whatever we do; save by dying, and there too we are caught, by being planted too close to our parents. (David Ignatow)

"Whenever I watch TV and see those poor starving kids all over the world, I can't help but cry.  I mean, I'd love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff"....

ACTUALLY CAREY LUCAS DID NOT EVEN RUN FOR CONGRESS in 1978 in the Republican Primary. But he was elected in November.  It was by lucky happenstance that Carey Lucas ended up in the US Congress:  The long, long-time congressman for the Bluegrass, Mark Stephens, was upset in the primary by Dick Matthews.  Allies of Carey Lucas, fellow Republicans, carried through skillfully the withdrawal of the Republican nominee, Alice May Jillian; thus, replacement candidate Carey Dwayne Lucas.
GOP leaders, more or less, dumped nominee Jillian, a former state treasurer. This final decision (for withdrawal) paved the way and brought the door open for Carey Lucas....Her withdrawal statement sounded much like a campaign spill. The whole matter was very peculiar.

And Johnny C. Brent, the former Republican governor of Kentucky, was among powerful Republicans rousing Alice May's withdrawal.  Johnny C. Brent took a considerable amount of credit for Carey Lucas becoming US congressman.

The Lucas campaign out-spent Matthews more than 3-1....It was the first time in almost 50 years that a Republican had represented the district. Democrats, 4-1 to this day, nonetheless, outnumber (Republicans). Only one other Republican had ever held the seat since the War Between the States.

A KET TV host once asked former Republican Governor Johnny C. Brent about his encouraging Alice May Jillian to drop out of the race, in order for Carey Lucas to get it (and other Republican members doing the same: discouraging her running).

"Wasn't that dishonest?" the KET news host asked.  "The fact of the matter was that Alice May Jillian had been elected by district voters."

Johnny C. Brent threw his head back and laughed, "Cricket...or no...which it was, I am not sure. There have been a number of grasshoppers...and roaches, also, that have made their passage into politics."
