I'm really just interested in making new friends.
I've had some penpals now for 10 years and I have found the exchanges interesting and rewarding. I've corresponded with many people from the States, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, etc. I like to hear more about other places than what I hear on the news or read in stale geographic articles.
I'm interested in hearing opinions that may not quite agree with my own. I won't flinch from that, and find friendly discussions of opposing viewpoints interesting. It also offers me a chance to evaluate what I what my real motives are about what I think. Mind you if you profess to be a wife/child abuser, well there are some things I draw the line at! :-)
But to reiterate my previous statement, I am not looking for online (or offline) affairs/romances.
