One of the most popular Lighthouses in Maine
Visitors come from everywhere to capture pictures of Nubble Lighthouse. I have been there on many occassions to watch artists sketch or paint the lighthouse. It truly is a sight to behold.
President Rutherford B Hayes signed the order establishing a light station in York in 1879. It cost the government $15,000 to build it. Nubble Light sits on an island at the Cape Neddick Peninsula. The main house is a 6 room Victorian built in the shape of the cross. The Tower is 40 feet high and is built on the islands highest point which puts it at a total height of 88 feet to flash it's red light about every 6 seconds. The lighthouse was automated by the Coast Guard in 1987. In 1998 the Coast Guard began turning over ownership of most of Maine's Lighthouses. Nubble Light, sometime in 1998 was turned over to the Town of York.
If you would like to visit Nubble Light from U.S. Rte 1 in York take Rte 1A to York Beach, turn right onto Nubble Road and then travel about 1 mile onto Nubble Point.
Other points of interest near or in the Town of York is Mt. Agamenticus and Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, ME.
