UNSCRAMBLING SCRAM
AV PUBLISHES FIRST EVER ESSAY ON THE FILM THEY TRIED TO BAN
The first half of 1998 has seen two major achievements in film making. The first being the long awaited sequel to Captain Super Human Universe, the second is amazingly from the score director of the sequel. Joseph Bennie (pictured below left) directed and acted in this reinvention of the horror genre. In our review of Captain Super Human Universe Returns, we noted that it was a post modern masterpiece, because it deconstructed the super hero genre. If there is such thing as post modern post modernism, then this film comes close. What do we mean by this statement? Well simply, an unkown script writer called Kevin Williamson came along and wrote a film called "scream". The sure direction of Wes Craven reinvigorated a supposedly "tired" genre. Scream 2 followed in the clever self referential revisionism that Scream began. And now comes along Scram, which not only references Scream (it's more than obvious), but takes it to the extreme of absurdity. In fact, Scram does not even attempt to horrify you, it's so obsessed with being so much like a horror film that it becomes something else.
