THE LITTLE VOICE IMPRESSIVE

The obvious highpoint of the Little Voice is Jane Horrocks amazing impressions of actors and singers ranging from Marilyn Monroe to Liza Minelli. For me, being unfamiliar with these actors except through short soundbites and parodies on Full Frontal, Little Voice stood as an excellent movie that also happens to have an amazing piece of acting. Actually, not only is "little voice" excellent in her role, but Brenda Blethyn as the mother is at her annoyingly funny best, Michael Caine is excellent as the B grade showbiz promoter (though not even golden globe worthy) while Ewan McGreggor and a fat lady provide interesting side shows to the action of the film. The obsession that little voice has with her father and the extent to which her true self is hidden behind the hurt of his loss is brought out brilliantly in the film - the closing scene with the mother and daughter in the charred remains of a room being symbolic of her final release from the shadow of his memory. While it is ultimately not as powerful as Secrets and Lies, its excellence belongs to the actors who make this film one of the better releases of the year.
