ENEMY OF THE STATE
After the Siege, another film that could induce some sort of discussion - with a message. At least action films are trying to become a little more than just about explosions. The display of technology is quite good, and Will Smith's acting is as usual at a high standard. Gene Hackman is also good. THe film plays on the paranoia issue, but it ultimately gets bogged down by its own complications - in other words, the ending is a bit silly. However, the first act is very entertaining and so too is the middle section.
FAST EDITING - WILL BRUCKHEIMER SLOW DOWN?
Bruckheimer must choose editors that work on those techno music clips that you see in night clubs. Even in slow moving scenes that should develop emotion or some feeling, the camera can't stay still. Why do we need five different shots of a person cut at two second intervals in a scene that is not an action scene - it only lessens the impact of cutting when the actual action set piece comes on. Don't get me wrong - I sometimes love this style of editing - it can almost save a hopeless action film - but this one isn't hopeless - the cameera could afford to stay still for just a few seconds this time. Also, we've had a similar style in Armageddon - and one Bruckheimer fast paced film is enough for me. Though, it is a change from normal editing practices - but thank god for that. I'm sure some movie goers were not only dizzy from the plot complications.
All in all - a slightly above standard action-thriller.
