COOL HAND LUKE
Cool Hand Luke is one of those films that become instant classics. Some defining scenes are in it that stand out for all time. The egg eating scene is just one of those - but it is the humanity that pervades throughout the action, and its real innocence that keep the film alive. The performances are still excellent, especially Paul Newman's. Lalo Schifrin's score includes some classic motifs... so classic that it is now the music for the National Nine News broadcast. Another interesting thing is that the way the main prison guard wears his sunglasses is copied in Spielberg's E.T. (I think it's E.T.) as a commentary on the faceless/eyeless justice as a whole.
