Ethan is rather young for a jaded hunter. At a mere 21 years, Ethan already has a tangled growth of beard and dark blond hair, with a longsword and a pistol in his belt, and a composite longbow on hand. He has a deep scar on his chest, a constant reminder of his sworn foe. His blue eyes seem sunken and occupied with something else, always darting around, as if he was trying to find something. He wears drab colors, usually a brown jerkin with brown leggings. Underneath his clothing, he always wears his leather armor; it has saved his life on more than one occasion. Background Ethan Gibbons, once a Nova Vaasan rogue, made his living pilfering from the rich and giving to himself and his younger brother Thomas. Their parents died when the boys were young, and Ethan had to take care of his little brother however he could, even if that meant stealing money and food from the aristocracy. He knew that if he got caught, his captors would have him executed, so he honed his skills and became one of the slipperiest cat burglars in Kantora. Some years ago, Ethan heard that a local aristocrat had a reward out for his head, and that a dark stranger with a huge sword had taken the job. Naturally, Ethan feared for his life, and he took his brother and tried to flee. They thought that if they got out of Kantora, they'd be free, but after only a short time on the road, an oppressive fog enveloped them. They stopped and wondered what had just happened. That proved to be a fatal mistake. In a flash, a black-coated figure appeared, brandishing a four-foot cleaver, and slashed a deep gash into Ethan's chest. Ethan spotted Thomas out of the corner of his eye as he fell to the ground, and told him to run. As Thomas struggled to flee, the dark figure turned his blade on him, and chopped off his right leg below the knee, following through with a blow that killed Thomas instantly. He grabbed Ethan and lifted him off the ground. Ethan asked him, "Why did you kill my brother? I'm the one you should have killed." The man looked at him with his red-green eyes and replied, "A bonus. Don't worry; you'll die shortly," and hurled him into the Dnar River. Ethan thought he would die, and passed out in the freezing waters. He would have died in the river, if a passing fisherman hadn't pulled him out in the nick of time. The kind old fisherman taught him how to fish while Ethan stayed with him for the next couple of weeks, but Ethan only had one thought on his mind: the dark soldier, the man with the cleaver, the man who coldly murdered his brother. Current Sketch It has been five years since Thomas met his end, and Ethan has spent every day since then trying to find his brother's killer. All he has to go on are the black coat, black hat, and giant cleaver. Several times, he has thought he had cornered the man, but it seems like the Dark Soldier is toying with him, and he always manages to escape before Ethan can get to him. Recently, Ethan discovered that the Dark Soldier is a fiend, but that discovery almost cost him his life. After recovering, he started to learn everything he could about fiends, and he plans to use that knowledge when he next encounters the Dark Soldier, to properly avenge Thomas's senseless death. He has an arrow that he hopes will finish him off, carved of a dark red wood and fitted with a silver-edged arrowhead. When he isn't hunting the Dark Soldier, Ethan can usually be found on the waters, near the shore, in a small fishing boat, trying to make a living without having to steal from anyone. Combat Ethan hates being pressed into combat, but his weapons--Inferno, Striker, and Rough--are always present on his body, allowing him to enter combat at a moment's notice. If hunting, he prefers to ambush his quarry from a distance, closing in to finish his foe off in melee. Resolve (Ex): Ethan gains a +4 morale bonus to Constitution and Wisdom when he faces the Dark Soldier in combat. This grants an effective +2 bonus to Fortitude and Will saves and gives him 16 temporary hit points. these bonuses last for the duration of the encounter plus 2 rounds. Home Having nothing left in Nova Vaasa, Ethan has moved to Mordent, as far away from his original home as possible. He owns a small house and a fishing boat on the outskirts of Mordentshire. Seeing Thomas comes as a horrifying shock; the translucent spirit has had its right leg hacked off at the knee, and a huge gaping hole in his chest continues to bleed ethereal blood down his torso. He wears the same rags he wore when he met his brutal death, stained with dirt, grass, and his blood. He looks like an adolescent, and in fact met his end at the age of 12.
