The Children's Fire
In some Native American communities, when a major decision must be made, the village leaders convene a Medicine Circle. At the four points of the Wind sit various important leaders, such as the Chief and the Shaman. At the entrance of the circle sits the Fool, whose job is to turn every question about the decision around, to make sure that all facets of the decision have been examined. In the center of the circle is the Children's Fire, guarded by the Village Elder. Suppose that the decision involves the sale of mineral rights to the tribe's land. It will bring in much needed cash to the tribe, but may have many negative effects. Guided by the guardian of the Children's fire, the group must examine the effects of the decision on their children's children's children down seven generations. If a positive decision can be seen to adversely affect them, then the decision is "no," despite the immediate financial benefits.
Our question is: Who is guarding the Children's Fire in our society?
