Christmas - December 25th
Origin
- Christmas has a many faceted origin. Christmas is actually near the time when Gabriel appeared to Mary. In an attempt to Christianize the Roman Empire, The Roman Catholic Church meshed pagan holidays with Jewish and Christian ones. This was an evangelistic move and not intended to be a religious compromise. The Winter Celebration of Saturnalia, the mytholical birth of the sun god, was meshed with the time when Gabriel appeared to Mary and not Christs birth. Saturnalia began or begins December 18th and completes on December 25th. The Jewish holiday Chanukah also coincides with this time.
Present
- To remember Jesus Christs birth. Has been commercialized and unfocused from Christ.
See
Luke 2:1-11 .
Santa legends
- Saint Nicholas was a Roman Catholic Bishop who lived in Myra, Turkey in 4th century AD. The bishop was known for his generosity and expediantly Christian lifestyle. Sometime after his death, he was granted sainthood and his life was celebrated yearly on December 6th to override a pagan celebration. The pagan celebration was to welcome an ugly female deity named Berchta who rode on a broom and would bless, curse, and leave gifts for good children. The Roman Catholic Church attempted to point the pagans in the direction of Christ by meshing the St. Nicholas tale with the pagan celebration.
Christmas Trees - Some believe the Christmas tree practice is condemned in Jeremiah 10:2-4. Again in an evangelistic attempt to convert pagans to Christianity, this practice was meshed with the idea of the Jesse Tree. The Jesse Tree is Jesus' family tree which includes ancient Old Testament prophecies of Jesus. The Roman Catholics placed verses and scripture references as ornaments on Christmas trees.
