My Opinion Off The Cuff
Featured Dilemma:
A friend asked me today: "How much of our lives do you think we spend putting on an act?"
Ask yourself the same question: How much time have you spent 'acting' -- being someone or something you are not? We have all done it ... to fit in at school, to get the job or spare the feelings of someone else. We hide our emotions to give ourselves that advantage in the poker game of life. People actually look down upon 100% honesty white lies with selfish or selfless motivations are deemed necessary in certain situations. We must be selective and know when it is appropriate to say what we feel or when we should just keep our mouths shut. Guys for instance are basically taught not to show their feelings because it isnt manly and can even be seen as unattractive. Because of this there are very few people who completely wear it on their sleeve, the rest of us spend a fair amount of time putting on an act for whatever reason.

I had to think a while about how much I did it myself, but I came up with an even 50/50 split (since if I wasnt myself more than 50% of the time technically that would be the true me and the remainder would be the time that I wasnt being myself). There are times when I feel that it is beneficial not to say what I truly feel and I think that a lot of us are reserved that way some more than others.

American Beauty was a perfect example of how people project an image of success just to deal with their own feelings and essentially hide their weaknesses. Priorities usually dictate to what degree we attempt to please others. So why are we so intent on making other people like us for being something we are not? Often it is for our own personal benefit: a favour in the future, popularity or some weird complex where you have to have everyone like you. Weird!?! I read that last one in a book somewhere not in black beauty asses! So the next time you are at work, school or even at the dinner table with your family ask yourself is this the real me? I think that you will find that there is no spoon. ZEN!
