| Chicago Churches: A Photographic EssayElizabeth Johnson (Photographer), Richard M. Daley
Rating: 8 Deci-Malls This is a fine book that looks at 100 churches in the Chicago area. I was personally disappointed that St. Andrew's Lutheran on the south side wasn't in this volume (I once preached from the pulpit of St. Andrew's), but overall I enjoyed the book. Ms. Johnson didn't just include the pictures of the "bold and beautiful" churches and cathedrals, which most people would expect, but she includes a good cross section of architectural styles and faiths. This book, if there is a weakness, only shows the outside of the churches (and one picture, since it seems the church blends in with the surrounding buildings, was difficult to decipher which building was actually the church). An interior shot of some of the churches would have been nice, but that is an artistic difference. To be sure, it has to be difficult to keep the number of buildings featured to 100 and adding more pictures increases the cost. Overall, a very good book. Read the Author Interview.
