8 November 2004 Dear Mr. President,
In writing this letter, I will start by being honest with you: I did not vote for you in the election that passed. Even so, I felt it necessary to address some concerns I have. In your victory speech, you addressed people like me, asserting that you need our support and you will work hard to earn it. So that you do not have to guess, let me explain the issues that kept me from voting for you. Firstly, I could never forget how you gave tax cuts to the rich and to rich business owners because you honestly thought that they would use the extra money to create more jobs. Instead, such owners pocketed that money and continued outsourcingeven when they were prospering. Such CEOs are so affluent that they could afford to pay more in taxes instead of less. By proportion of wages, the middle and working classes pay more in taxes; when was the last time they had a tax break? Also, it is a fact that more than 50 million Americans, nearly one quarter of the population, are without health coverage, yet I have seen little done to rectify this situation. Also, while I will admit that I was against the war in Iraq when it first started, I now have mixed feelings. I am among several other American who need more reassurance as to why we fought this war in the first place and why we are still therewhile our men and women keep getting killed. Finally, it is important to establish the unfairness of the Patriot Act you pushed for. According to this law, anyone who says the wrong thing or creates the slightest amount of suspicion could have their garbage checked, their house and car searched, and any magazine subscriptions or visited websites recordedall without a warrant. I realize that this law was implemented to "control terrorism," it is nevertheless, sir, undemocratic, unconstitutional, and un-American. The law would be more reasonable if warrants were issued (as with any search), and if it involved less sneaking around.
While it would be easy to do so, I am not going to label you as an antagonist. I am beginning to understand that in some of the things you do, you really believe you are doing the right thing. In fact, we went to war against Afghanistan, I supported you 100%. I knew why it was important to discipline a country that refused to hand over the worlds most dangerous terrorist (although I do not understand why our agents were not sent to look for him). In the months that followed 9/11, when I was angry, depressed, and frightened, I would regain hope after listening to your speeches. I also supported your decision to insure that government funding would not pay for abortions. I am an evangelical Christian like yourself, Mr. Presidenta devout member of the Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod. I believe very strongly that embryos and fetuses are human, and that abortion is murder. I take that a step further; it is worse than killing an adult. I would be sick to think that my tax dollars would ever be used to sanction infanticide. Therefore, I urge you to press on in regards to this matter. As for the items of concern (healthcare, outsourcing, unemployment, tax cuts, and the Patriot Act), I pray that you will do something as soon as possible to resolve these matters, and help get the average American back on his/her feet. If you can promise me you will do this, you will have my full support.
May God truly bless and guide you in all of your future decisions.
