Author of Note
Written May 2003

I have read books by many good authors. Ann M. Martin. Rita Mae Brown. Madeleine L’Engle. Judy Blume. Jerry West. Carolyn Keene. Of all the authors out there, one author stands out in the crowd. One author writes books that none of the others can rival. One author out of them all is the best. That author is Tamora Pierce.
Tamora Pierce writes really good books for teenagers. She’s written five fantasy quartets (Song of the Lioness, The Immortals, Protector of the Small, Circle of Magic, and The Circle Opens), all of which I have read multiple times. The books are the best that I’ve ever read. Tamora Pierce’s books make me forget reality. They pull me in, and I can’t put them down until I’ve finished the story, at which point I am left asking for more. That, to me, marks a good book.
Tamora Pierce’s books show what girls can do. In most of them, the main character is a girl who can do what any boy can do. In two of the quartets (Song of the Lioness and Protector of the Small), the main characters are girls who becomes a knight—a position that was thought to be a boy’s job. They proved that they were just as good as, if not better than, the boys. In one quartet (The Immortals), the main character is a girl who uses her powers to help save her country. In the last two quartets (Circle of Magic and The Circle Opens), the main characters learn how to control their magic and use it to help save others. Since the majority of the characters in Tamora Pierce’s books are both female and children and so are the readers, these books leave readers feeling inspired.
The books written by Tamora Pierce are also somewhat educational. The Song of the Lioness, The Immortals, and Protector of the Small quartets are set in a county called Tortall during medieval times. When reading them, the reader takes a step into the past and learn a bit about what life was like back then. In The Immortals, the reader also learns about all the different kinds of animals that Daine encounters. Both Circle quartets are set in a totally different land, called Emelan. The Circle Opens lets the readers see into the minds of different types of criminals.  Both Circle of Magic and The Circle Opens let the readers learn about different cultures. Whenever someone picks up a Tamora Pierce book, the person is learning about something.
Tamora Pierce is not just any old famous person. She’s a likeable one. She’s not snobby, like some people are. Instead, she’s really nice to her fans. She runs a message board (www.sheroescentral.com) on which she actually posts, and she even talks to us about her books on one forum. She acts like one of us, and though she’s a favorite author of many users, we see her as one of us. Once, when she was doing a book-signing in Baltimore, she met with a bunch of us Sheroes for lunch at a hotel there. She signed the books that we all brought along, and talked with us during lunch. She even bought lunch for all fourteen of us! Not just anyone would do that. She’s really nice to her fans, and from what I’ve seen she’s just a nice person in general.
Hands down, Tamora Pierce is the best. That’s all there is to it. Her books are awesome, and she’s nice. What more could a person ask for in an author?
