| Risks |

| With every piercing or tattoo, there are risks that come along with the package. Tongue piercings especailly are prone to infections b/c the piercing is in the nastiest part of our bodies, our mouths. Some risks you should be aware of are listed below: |

| Within the first few hours of getting your tongue pierced, swelling begins to occur. For some people it's minimal, for others, it can swell drastically. This is a risk b/c if the tongue swells too much, it can block the airway and make it complicated to breath correctly. This is not common, but it can happen. Swelling varies from person to person. My swelling was minimal. |
| When people get their tongues pierced and it heals, their inital reaction is to play with it. This is a big NO NO. Playing with the barbell or even biting down on the barbell really hard can cause fractures, chips, and/or cracks in the teeth. An easy solution to this is to swap the metal barbell with an acrylic one and to go to a shorter sized barbell. Acrylic barbells are very easy to find. |
| The Risks: Infections- There are two kinds of infections that are commonly associated with tongue peircings are Systemic and Localized infections. HIV and Hepatitis are two examples of Systemic infections and can be contracted due to unsterile equipment being used (such as clamps and needles). The piercer should always use an Autoclave to sterilze all equipment. An example of localized infection is pale or yellow discharge around the pierced hole. Do not freak out, none of these infections are normal or common, but they do exist. Infections also occur if you are a heavy smoker and do not brush after you smoke |

| There are no real perks that are the same for everyone. Perks vary from person to person. Me, for instance, didn't get my tongue pierced b/c everyone else had it, I got it b/c it was something to do, something I wanted done. Below are a list of perks that you get with the piercing: |

| People are very curious now a days. Because of this, tongue piercings can be great conversation pieces. People want to know if it hurt, how much you paid, why you got it, etc. It's also very cool when people ask, it makes you feel special:) |
| TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK: It is said that tongue piercings inhance oral pleasure. I personally would not suggest doing this b/c there are lots of germs down there and those germs are mixing with the germs that are already in your mouth and.......well, it's just nasty. But there are different strokes for different folkes :) |

| If you are trying to get a job, especailly one that is a professional type job (bank,corporation, places that don't except piercings of that sort), remember toTAKE YOUR TONGUE RING OUT!. This has happened to me once. I had an interview at a bank, went in there, and the person kept looking at my mouth. I forgot to take my tongue ring out and did not get the job LOL. |
| If you got the piercing against your mom and /or dads will, don't forget about the piercing when talking to them. Your best bet is to buy a little capsule looking thing that slips over the piercing. It is clear and with it on, you barely notice the piercing. |
