My two choices:  Immigrants and Advertising

Immigrants

I.  Why did people come to the US?
There were several different reasons people came to the U.S.   Most of the immigrants came here to escape poverty or persecution.  East European Jews came to the U.S. to escape religious persecution, especially pogroms.  A pogrom is an event where a mob in a country take violent actions against Jews, such as burning their stores or killing Jews.  It was something  like what the KKK did against African-Americans.   Some immigrants, such as many Italians, came to the U.S.,  hoping to make money and return to Italy.  But sometimes that didnt work out, and they had to stay in the U.S.  Some immigrants wanted to try the land of opportunity.

II.  Were immigrants expectations met/was it different from their expectations?

There was a lot of false advertising about what the U.S. was really like, especially by steam ship companies and railroads.   Many  immigrants thought that they could come to the U.S. to make easy money.  Italians thought they could earn enough money in a couple years to go home to Italy and start a new life  there.  Immigrants were told that the U.S. was the land of opportunity so they came.
However, the Promised Land wasnt as good as it was promised.  Immigrants often had to do hard work to make even a small amount of money. They often could get only the worst jobs, at low pay, like working in mines, or textile mills,  or the garment industry.  They often had to work very long hours, sometimes as much as 15 hours a day.
There was also a lot of discrimination that stopped them from getting good jobs.
There were some good things though.  Even though the work was really hard, there were lots of jobs.  And there really was more freedom, and much less persecution. There were no pogroms in the U.S.  Jews didnt have to register with the state like they had to do in lots of European countries.

Advretising

Early on in industrys Golden age, advertising was just getting started. There were very few companies that advertised, but for those who did, it worked. Companies started using brand names like, Standard Oil which set an example that their oil was standard. Others used colorful labels on there items. Eventually, companies used billboards and newspapers to advertise.
Now, you can turn on the TV and find a car or truck commercial.  Almost all companies have adds in the newspaper and a jingle to play on TV. Today, all kids know what you mean when you say McDonalds or Burger King. Today, most hour programs have about 17 minutes of commercials and 43 minutes of actual program.
