August Meeting at ATC

Simulator Facility

Our next business meeting will be Thursday, August 19, at 1930. It will be in the Simulator Facility at the USCG Aviation Training Center north of Mobile Regional Airport off of Tanner Williams Road. If you are coming out west on Airport Blvd., take a right on Schillinger and then a left at the Tanner Williams/Old Shell Road traffic light. The ATC entrance guard house will be on the left. Please remember that the ATC hasn’t seen us in a couple of years. Stop at the guard house; tell them you are going to an Auxillary meeting in the simulator facility; guests or new members that are asked for ID should show them a driver’s liscence; and if you are saluted return the salute. Follow the signs to the Credit Union parking lot and walk across the foot bridge to the simulator facility.

We’re still talking about the last time we met at the ATC. So, if this meeting is anything like the last one you won’t want to miss it. If you want to use the Exchange while you’re in the area, be aware that it closes at 6:30PM. You are welcome to wait for the meeting start in the Gator Lounge.

GPS Rollover Looms

August 21, 1999 7:00 CST

The GPS EOW rollover occurs every 1,024 weeks -- about once every 20 years. The GPS system calculates time by counting the number of weeks since Jan. 6, 1980 -- up to a maximum of 1,024 weeks. At midnight between Aug. 21-22, 1999 Universal Time Coordinated (UTC) (which is 8:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time) the GPS week "counter" will roll over to zero weeks. The Department of Defense (DOD), which operates the GPS satellites, says this will not create problems for the GPS satellites or DOD's GPS ground control center, but it could present a problem for consumers who use GPS receivers and related applications. That's because after Aug. 21, 1999, receivers that are not built to standards could process satellite data incorrectly and display inaccurate information.

On Thursday, Aug. 19, at 10:00 p.m. UTC (which is 6:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time), new information tables will begin to be uploaded to the GPS satellites. These tables, known as almanacs, contain information that allow GPS receivers to predict which satellites are in view at an estimated location and time. These are used by the receiver to lock onto the correct satellites and to continue proper operation as satellites fall below the horizon and others rise into view. GPS receivers that are not fully compliant with the current standards may experience GPS receiver malfunctions when trying to use the new almanacs.

According to the May 1999 issue of Boat/US Magazine, all GPS units manufactured from 1994 on are both EOW and Y2K compliant. DOD has determined that the GPS satellites and its ground control center will operate properly after Dec. 31, 1999 and is therefore Y2K compliant. If you aren’t sure about your GPS unit the USCG navigation web site http://www.navcen.uscg.mil/gps/geninfo/y2k/default.htm includes a list of manufacturers’ names and phone numbers.

Public Education

The last Boating Safely course of the year will start September 11 at the Alba Club. PE MacRae and the other instructors have had a busy year in Public Education. They would have taken a well deserved break, but arrangements are already being made to have a BS&S course at E&B Marine starting late October or early November.

Driftwords on Web

This week I had some free time (finacially not a good thing) and I am putting copies of the Driftwords on my personal Web page. This August issue is at http://www.geocities.com/Eureka/Mine/6765/driftwords/dw99vi.html . Please take a look at it and let me know what you think. Hopefully, I won’t have time to do this every month, but it could turn into a good way to save postage mailing the Driftwords to people who already have access to the Web.

Driftwords Deadline September 10

Please send information and stories to me by Friday, September 10. Even if the only things you have are event dates, please send them to me. You can e-mail me at [email protected] or [email protected] or call me for a fax number or mail me at 5761 Duchess Ct., Mobile, AL 36609.
