November Meeting

The November 15th meeting will be at the Anchor & Shield Club at Base Mobile on Thursday, 1930.  Due to ever changing security at the base, it is recommended that you wear your uniform and bring your ID.  If you have invited a guest to the meeting, please call Steve Andrews – FC so that he can get their names on the list at the guard building.  Please arrive a little earlier than usual as the security measures can cause you to be delayed getting on the base.

December 8th Party

We’re having a party on December 8th at the Mariner Restaurant.  Happy hour is from 5:00PM to 6:00PM.  The dinner will be ordered from the menu and you can have anything you want (as long as you pay for it).  We will be in the Mariner’s private room with a view of the Dog River.  After dinner, there will be a “dirty Santa” exchange of gifts.  Ladies should bring a $10 ladies’ gift and men should bring a $10 men’s gift.  The gifts should be wrapped and marked only as “lady” or “man”.

Reservations have been made and we are expecting 50 people.

Directions to the Mariner are:  Drive south on Dauphin Island Parkway until you cross the Dog River Bridge.  Take a right on Bayou Road.  About ½ mile later take a right on Rock Point Road.  Follow the road until it takes you directly into the parking lot.  If you need more help, the GPS coordinates are –88.0937 & 30.5667.

Aviation Update

Alex Grimes

MSO missions have resumed.  The missions we fly with MSO are MEP (Marine Environmental Protection) patrols. We are looking primarily for pollution either from vessels or industry.  Typically we have a "regular" on board who documents any sighting with a digital camera. He will then decide if it is severe enough to warrant immediate response or wait until we land to send someone out.   A few situations in the past have required immediate action and at that point MSO is contacted via radio and they will then dispatch someone.

MSO Update

Chief Harry Chichester

[email protected]

Currently we are working on a training schedule for our Auxiliarist's in Initial Pollution Investigation and also increased awareness in Port Safety by the Auxiliary in a Coast Watch program. We still need help. At least until a training routine can be established (We are hoping by 31DEC01), we are in need of at least 1 extra Auxiliarist that wants to get out in the field, Monday through Friday 8AM to 3PM, working in Pollution Investigations. It does not need to be the same person for Monday through Friday, but the times available coincide with our departure and return times. This person would conduct harbor patrols with Active Duty/Reserve Duty counterparts, gaining experience that will help them with the Initial Pollution Investigator Qual.

Also, I have finished the HAZWOPER "Train the Trainer" course. With this I intend to provide the 8-hour OSHA required training to the Auxiliary in order for them to more fully participate in Pollution Investigation.

Training Schedule Pends...

Mobile’s Tricentennial Celebration

Ann Bedsole gave us an overview of the Tricentennial Celebration. Detailed information is available at their headquarters, but she told us about history and books and flowers and birthday cakes and walking trails and neighborhood revivals. It is to be a year of celebration and discovery and uniting of diverse groups.

Two events will be of particular interest to Auxliarists, and here’s what you need to know: If you’ve made plans for the Fourth of July, cancel them, and if you haven’t gotten your Boat Crewman Training, get it.

For the first time ever, the Tall Ships will be in the Gulf of Mexico, coming to Mobile to advertise what a great port Mobile is. On the Fourth of July, we can be on the water with them, helping secure areas, etc. We may also be needed earlier, as they make their way up the bay.

The Battle of Mobile Bay will be re-enacted. It is being advertised all over the country, and schooners from up north are already scheduled to take part. We will be needed to help with water traffic for that event as well.

PRESENTATIONS

Ron Muschel was sworn in as a new member.

Ed Hollowell received his Marine Dealer Visitor Certificate of Training.

Maryanne Worley received her Vessel Examiner Certificate of Training.
