May 17th Meeting

The May 17th meeting will be at the Anchor & Shield Club on Base Mobile at Thursday, 1930.

Marine Dealer and Vessel Examinations

Ken MacRae

John Sumrall is re-certified as a VE and we had a good day at Dauphin Island Boat Ramp on the 30th.  They have now completed fixing all the ramps at Billy Goat Hole and anyone can launch there now.

Fund Raising

Alex Grimes

The subject of “fundraising” was brought up at our Feb. meeting and I had said that I would try to get some clarification from DIRAUX as to what the boundaries might be.

Well here it is! According to CDR Montgomery, almost anything can be considered. He suggested that we come up with some ideas and then he will advise on how to proceed with the ones we choose.

I will have the topic on the agenda for our May meeting so be thinking about what you would like to see us do. We will try to narrow the ideas to a manageable few but nothing is “off limits” to start with.

Public Education

Ken MacRae

We finished a Boating Safely Class at Springhill Church Activity Center and also spent a LOOOONG  day at Mobile County Training Middle School telling 483 students that Water Safety is important and they need to wear their Life Jackets and don't swim or boat alone.

Operations

Nick Nichols

Flotilla 3-9's participation in the " Blessing of the Fleet " at Bayou La Batre on 6 May 01 was outstanding. Three fully equipped and fine tuned vessels launched at 0930 from Billy Goat Hole, Dauphin Island and after a briefing at USCG SAR-DET D.I., headed for Bayou La Batre at 1000. We returned to D.I. at 1600.

A combined total of 10 Crewmen, Coxswains and trainees plus a USCG Coxswain were involved. Cooperation between crewmembers with launching, docking and re-trailering tasks was outstanding.

Each participant received 6 hours operational time, had fun and a seafood dinner "on the ground "

It was a PROUD DAY for Flotilla 3-9 .

Member eTraining and eTesting Site

The Department of Training has further expanded its electronic presence and offerings thanks to the partnership established with the team from D7 DIRAUXWest.  Direct access to the site has been simplified by establishing a new URL: www.auxetrain.org.  This easy-to-remember address gives the member direct access to an extensive array of training material and e-testing capabilities.  There is also a link from the Training Department's national webpage and a link from FutureWeb.  It is suggested that members visit the site frequently to keep up with the new additions and changes that will be coming.  “www.auxertrain.org” is a continuous work in progress that will only be made better by input from the membership.  We are excited about further extending the opportunities and technologies for our membership.
