March 15th Meeting

The March 15th meeting will be at the Anchor & Shield Club on Base Mobile at Thursday, 1930.

Marine Dealer and Vessel Examinations

Ken MacRae

We had 19 Marine Dealer visits this month.  We expect to pick up some more Dealers in the Saraland area this month.  We still need members who have a little time and like to talk boats to become Marine Dealer Visitors.

We inspected 4 vessels and 2 Facilities this month.  Our first Ramp day at Luscher Park was not well attended due mostly to weather but was well worth the time.  Our next ramp day will be March 31, 2001 at the boat launch on the Causeway from 10:00 to 14:00.  We will complete training of two more VE’s then.  If interested, come on out and watch.

Operations

Nick Nichols

Helo-Ops training sessions are on-going each Tuesday and Thursday.  Auxiliarists are welcome to participate and train as crewmen on the “41 footers”.  Orders come to the station “after dark” on Monday and Wednesday and Auxiliarists must call the station on those evenings confirming their intention to participate.

On-the-water Patrols for an approved purpose will only be accepted with the “Senior Chiefs” approval. His office must be notified 3-4 days in advance for clearance. Order numbers will be issued when under-weigh.

Saturday training sessions will resume in April if the station is assured of adequate participation.  These sessions will be held at SARDET Dauphin Island.

Call-Out Patrols will be made only if the CG Station is satisfied with the qualifications of Coxswain, Crewmen, and Vessels.

Public Education

John Sumrall

The Boating Safety class began Tuesday February 20th and will run for three consecutive weeks. It will be held at the Springhill Baptist Church.  We will have our next course on March 10, 2001 for a Boy Scout troop at a local church.  Our next regular scheduled class will start March 20, 2001 at 6:30 P.M. at the Spring Hill Baptist Church Activities Building.

Aviation

Michael Grimes

Word was received from AIRSTA NOLA that Aux. Flights would resume in March. However, due to budget constraints, the duration and frequency would be limited.

Aquatic Nuisance Species Training Guide

The U.S. Coast Guard's Environmental Standards Division (G-MSO-4) under CDR Scott Newsham, Chief, and LTJG JoAnne Hanson have developed and published a concise Training Guide on Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) http:/cgauxweb/MSEP/ANStrain.pdf  (Adobe Acrobat™ format, 379KB).  This training guide will help educate Auxiliarists and the boaters with whom they interact regarding the current threats posed to our environment from these nuisances.
