January 18 Meeting

The January 18th meeting will be at the Anchor & Shield Club on Base Mobile at Thursday, 1930.  Learn of the exciting plans Flotilla Commander Steve Andrews has for 2001.  Also, any Flotilla Staff Officers who were not sworn in during the Holiday Dinner will be sworn in during this meeting.

Holiday Party

Steve Andrews

I wish to personally thank our party committee of Nick & Winnie Nichols, Phil & Maryanne Worley for a job very well done. Everyone with whom I spoke concurred.  The party was held at the Wharfhouse Grill Restaurant on 11 December 2000 @1700 Hours.

Since this restaurant is normally closed on Mondays we had it all to ourselves. Featured was a choice of salad or gumbo, fish pecan, or rib eye steak, or a stuffed chicken dish. The dessert was peanut butter pie, or cheesecake. We had a cash bar and before the dinner Ken MacRae installed the FC & VFC then the FSOs.

There were almost 40 attendees. Then after dinner we experienced a smashing "Dirty Santa" gift exchange. The party closed at 2100 hours.

Vessel Examination &

Marine Dealer Visits

Ken MacRae

Here are the schedules for Boat Safety Check ramp days and Marine Dealer Visitations.  All vessel examiners need to contact the FSO-VE at 666-1766 and indicate on which ramp days they can participate.  All Auxiliary members must have their facilities inspected for 2001.  If you have a surface facility call the FSO-VE to arrange a time and place to do the Inspection.  Air Facilities contact the Flotilla VC to arrange for their Inspection.

   Boat Ramp Days   Location

Feb. 24, 2001            Luscher Park

March 31, 2001         Causeway

April 28, 2001            Dauphin Isle.

July 28,  2001            Dauphin Isle.

August 25, 2001        Luscher Park

Sept. 29, 2001          Causeway

All Ramp Days will be from 10:00 to 14:00 hours.  We have two new VE's, but we need more!  If you like people and want to have fun and meet some nice folks contact Ken MacRae at 666 1766.

The Marine Dealer program this year will build on the very successful one we just had.  We have one member studying to become a MDV now but there is plenty of room for more.  We plan to make regular monthly visits to all our current Dealers and locate many more who have never been involved in the program.  Again this is a FUN program meeting people who want our assistance.  Contact the FSO-MD at 666-1766 and get started in a worthwhile program that does not take very much of your time.

Flotilla Commanders Academy

Steve Andrews

The following is a list of subjects (~ 1hour each) covered in the Flotilla Commanders Academy for 2001:

The Flotilla, The Effective Leader, Homework Review, The FCs Role in Representing the Organization, AUXMIS Overview and Report 1, AUXMIS Reports 3 & 4, Retention, Disenrollment, Volunteerism, Awards & Recognition, Awards & Recognition Part 2, Recruiting, Riding the Paperwork Tiger, Making AUXMIS Work for You, Idea Exchange, Holding Successful Meetings, Managing Flotilla Finances, Overcoming Problems, Staff Questions & Answers.

Each day started with a continental breakfast. Lunches consisted of Subway, pizza, and our final banquet was held at the Keesler Officers Club, and we were billeted at the Shaw House VOQ. Very nice rooms, double bed, TV, phone service, microwave, refrigerator, private bath, coffee maker and supplies.

The instructors were: Lee Dryja, DSO-PS, CDR Martin Phillips, CDR Montgomery, Tony Kregresse ADSO-CS, Dick Clinchy, DSO-PE.

Commodore Paul Riddle of Corpus Christi, TX hosted the Academy.  The academy was, in every respect, a huge success attended by approximately 35 FCs & VFCs.

Federal Law Lowers (BAC) Blood Alcohol Concentration from .10% to .08%

Effective March 12, 2001, the Coast Guard will use .08% limit to define a recreational boat operator as being “under the influence” of alcohol.  This new rule will not supercede any state law that is more stringent.  For a full text of the new rule go to:
