the right honourable sir jogendra singh (1877 - 1946) charismatic leader, author and much respected statesman of the punjab is best remembered for his lucid stories of guru nanak
as well as for his tenure as member of the indian viceroy (lord linlithgow's) executive council for health, laws and education from 1942 - 45
in 1946 as member of the department of education, health and agriculture he set up a committee to consider the setting up of higher technical institutions for post war development in india
the committee recommended the establihment of four institurions in the western, northern, eastern and southern regions
in may 1950 the first indian institute of technology was born in hijli - kharagpur in eastern india
