The last two years had been the hardest years of her life. It was two years ago today that her twenty year old marriage had ended. After her divorce, she had immediately devoted all of her time to her work and her kids. Sometimes Cynthia felt like more of a chauffeur than a mother. There was always something to be racing to. If it wasnt soccer or music lessons, it was gymnastics and hockey. She had always felt it important to keep the kids interested and involved in things. Yet it had taken its toll on her at times. It seemed that she was always running. Getting everyone ready in the morning was a real battle. There were fights for the bathroom, lunches to make and getting the kids off to school.
Cynthia would then have to get ready herself for work and make it there on time. She found she always had to make one last stop in front of her floor length mirror. She had to make sure she was pieced together properly. After all, she couldnt arrive at work half dressed. She once went to work with two different colored shoes on. It had been one of those mornings that she was frazzled. She had left the house in such a rush. It wasnt until a coworker burst into hysterical laughter pointing at her feet that she realized what she had done. She had vowed that day to make sure that never happened again.
Things had since changed a lot. Cynthia was doing very well at work . The kids were more interested in their social lives than spending time with their mother. They had grown to be independent. She was proud of them. They had really done quite well. Both of the kids now had their drivers licenses and were holding part time jobs. They both were also on the honor roll at school. Things were definitely shaping up nicely.
Despite this, Cynthia felt very alone in the world. She hadnt been able to bring herself to date much since her divorce two years ago. She was finding it very difficult to get back into the "dating scene" again. She devoted so much time to her kids that she had forgotten about her own life. Recently, Cynthia had felt the pangs of her loneliness. What she needed now was to find a way to meet new people. Her problem was knowing where to start. She had been out of circulation so long. Further, Cynthia didnt consider herself great looking. She viewed herself as a woman with average looks. She had long brown curly hair and deep green eyes. Her pale smooth complexion accented her deep red lips. With a smile and laughter that were contagious, anyone sitting in the same room found themselves grinning ear to ear. She needed a companion, a man who could accept her as she was. Friends had often invited her to go the bar with them. That scene just wasnt appealing to her. Sonja was a close friend at work who she saw as a true picture of beauty. Sonja had the perfect figure and complexion and nice long slender legs to match. Her golden blonde hair with those blue eyes which seemed to sparkle were undeniably breathtaking. Not only was she beautiful, but smart as well. She was knowledgeable with computers and the internet. Sonja had once talked about some sort of chatline on the internet. Cynthia decided it was time to talk to her and find out more about this. She had always seen the excitement in Sonjas eyes when she talked about it. If it worked for Sonja, then Cynthia was more than willing to give it a try.
When Cynthia awoke the next morning, the sun was shining brightly through her window. The birds were singing their morning tunes. She went to open the window and noticed the sky was that perfect shade of blue. The soft morning breeze rustled through the trees carrying the sweet scent of the lilacs that were in full bloom in her back yard. They were her favorite. She loved days like this!
Cynthia thought out loud. "Yes, this is going to be a great day!"
It felt so good to finally decide to take charge of her life. Today was the day of a new beginning. She headed for the shower and was singing the whole time. She dried herself off and pondered what she would wear today. She stood in front of her closet and eventually chose a forest green blazer with a matching skirt and a mint green silk blouse. It was her favorite. She loved the way it enhanced her eyes and made her pale skin look alive. Gazing at herself in the floor length mirror, she felt attractive for the first time in many years.
She entered the office that morning with a certain air of confidence around her. Sonja was there organizing her work for the day.
"Good morning Sonja!" smiled Cynthia.
Sonja was looking gorgeous as usual. She was wearing a Royal blue dress with gold accessories. This outfit made her look like a fashion model. Cynthia felt that twinge of envy creeping up inside of her.
"Hi Cynthia, how was your weekend?" asked Sonja.
She could see that Cynthia was just bursting with something. She was glowing. Her eyes had a sparkle unlike any Sonja had ever seen.
"It was okay," replied Cynthia.
"Just okay? You seem extra cheerful this morning. You even seem to have a certain bounce in your step. Whats up?" asked Sonja.
"Oh, nothing really. I have just been doing some thinking. Ive decided it is time to change my life and look for a new man," she replied grinning.
"Wow! Its about time girl! Wondered when you would come to your senses and start to live again!" smiled Sonja.
"Well, the boys are both so busy with their friends now. It just gets lonely sometimes you know?" she replied.
"Ive often wondered why you havent done something about this sooner."
"Well to be honest I have thought about it a great deal. I just wasnt sure where to start or if I was ready. Now, I think that I am ." said Cynthia.
"Thats great! So tell me, have you met someone then?" asked Sonja.
Sonja had often worried about Cynthia and the hermit type of life she was living. She was pleased that she was finally coming out of the shell she had built around herself.
Sonja watched Cynthia face with anticipation. She was totally focused on each word and expression of her friend. For so long, she had hoped that Cynthia would decide to start to live again after the divorce. Now it appeared to be happening.
"No, not yet. I was hoping that you could help me out with that?" Cynthia asked.
"Sure, but what can I do? Sonja questioned.
She wondered if maybe she wanted her to hook her up with a friend of her husbands. She had offered to do this for her several times in the past but Cynthia had always refused. Sonja took a little deeper breath and felt her heart skip a beat. She could feel the pressure. In fact, it felt like a baby elephant setting on her chest. Her friend had needed help for a long time, and now she was asking. She waited patiently to hear what Cynthia had in mind.
"Well, remember that chat line that you were talking about?" asked Cynthia.
"Sure, so you interested now? I can get you fixed up anytime you want."
"Yes I think maybe its time to get myself hooked up to the internet."
"Well once you do let me know okay? I will come over and help set you up with the program that I mentioned. You can meet some very nice people on there, trust me!" replied Sonja.
"Great!!!" Cynthia said. "Thanks, I will."
She felt a twinge in her heart. This was a major step for her. Deep within though she knew it was a step in the right direction for her. She was pleased with herself.
