General Questions:

FAQs from our honor members, who have passed SCJD:

Q. I just passed my SCJP, how do I start to prepare the developer exam?

A.Read Sun's objectives, read books, surf web, go to our Useful Links page to find tons of first hand material provided by our members who were/are taking the test and found them extremely useful. Join our SCJD study group, participate our extremely active discussion in our mailing list. Search our discussion archives to find answers to your specific questions. etc. etc...

However, best of all, pay the $250.00 testing fee, download your assignment, learn and do whatever takes to finish the assignment.

Q. I've heard there is another Java certification track, is it true? If it is, which one I should prepare?

A. Go to jCert Track Roadmap to find the information. The first part is the same as Suns, then two vendor specifics.

Make your own decision. You can follow either one of them (Suns or jCert), but not both IMHO. If you decide to pursue SCJD, you found your place.

Q. Is there a time limit on accomplishing the assignment?

A. No, as long as the test still exists.

Q. Do we have a recommanded reading list?

A. Yes, but not official from the Sun:
  1. The objectives of The Sun Certified Developer for the Java[tm] 2 Platform
  2. FAQs
  3. Guideline for SCJD2 Exam written by our honor member, SCJD Shashank Tanksali
  4. Questions and Answers about SCJD Exam presented by our honor member, SCJD Paco Venegas
  5. The Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide -- Simon Roberts, et al; Ch 14 - Ch19
  6. Java 1.2 Certification Exam Guide -- Barry Boone, William Stanek
  7. Useful links provided by our own members.
  8. Free Java Books
  9. Our members' presentations

Q. How to upload the assignment?

A. Use Sun Certification Database site to upload your assignment. If you've any problems you can always contact sun educational services at [email protected].

Important information provided by our member:Vilas Shettigar

"When you have completed your solution, you should build a jar archive. You must build an archive; do not send individual files. The name of your submission archive file MUST be derived from your i.d. as shown here. (Note that in the United States, your i.d. is your 9-digit social security number, e.g. 555443333. Outside the U.S., your i.d. might be 9 digits, or it might be 2 characters followed by 7 digits, e.g. sp1234567.) Your archive filename MUST BE "scjda-AAAAAAAAA.ZZZ", where AAAAAAAAA is your i.d., and ZZZ is the appropriate filename extension for your archive type (zip, tar, or jar).

It is good to know the exact naming convention. All my documentation referred to 'submit.jar' file and I had to change all of it to the desired naming convention just before uploading the assignment.

you have just 15 mins to upload. "

Q. When to appear the follow-up exam?

A. Just after you have sent the assignment for assessment, you can go ahead and write the follow-up exam. As it stands now, it seems you can write the exam even before the assignment is uploaded. But I would really advice writing the exam after submitting the assignment. This makes sense because the exam is supposed to be a justification exam for the design choices etc. you have made in your project and hence by then the project should have been completed.

It would really be nicer, if you buy the voucher few days before submitting the assignment and then scheduling the exam just one-two days after you submit the exam. That way, everything is fresh in your mind as regards the design choices you have made in your project.

Q.When to expect the result?

A. Four weeks is the maximum time that Sun Microsystems takes for the assessment to be done. The result, generally, comes in around 10 working days.

Q. How to know the score?

A. You would be notified by someone from Sun Certification group through email about your grades. Within a few days your results will get published on the Sun Certification Database. Please use the following link for checking your score:

View your Results From Sun Microsystems Certification Database

Q. What is the grading scheme?

A. The Maximum score for both the assignment project and the follow exam is 155. The break up of this score is given along with the "Instructions" page you get while downloading your assignment

There is just a single score for both the exams. As 80% is the pass mark, with 155 as the Maximum , 124 is the minimum mark for passing. And the exam grade, as usual, is "P" or "F".

Q.What kind of questions to expect in the follow-up exam?

A. As it is outlined in the Objectives of the follow-up exam, expect questions on the design choices you have made and a few objective type questions like that of the SCJP exam.

For example, for the FBN assignment, expect questions on Locking Design, RMI over Object Serialization, Choice of Containers, Different ways of handling exceptions etc.

As regards the Objective type questions, they are more or less similar to the SCJP exam. But be prepared of questions from JFC also.

It is good to be a walking Java compiler. It is better to be a Java developer.
