| Dan Waterstradt, Redford Catholic Central
When the 6-10 Waterstradt first came to Catholic Central he was more than just a basketball player. He was a soccer goalkeeper. "He wasn't 6-10 then, but he was pretty tall," CC basketball coach Rick Coratti said. "I think being a goalie helped him immensely. When he blocked shots he didn't swat at them and get fouls. He blocked a lot of them and came up with the ball himself." Waterstradt was the most dominating player in the Catholic League, averaging 20.4 points, 14.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks in leading CC to the Central Division title. He signed early with Rutgers. "He practiced intensely and it carried over into the games," Coratti said. "No one practiced harder on a daily basis. He was always diving for loose balls. During one pregame he dove for a loose ball and hit a chair. He was a 6-10 kid who played like a guard in that regard. "He was a good leader. A good leader has to be your hardest worker, and Dan was that." |
| ALL-WEST
April 2, 2004 Dan Waterstradt isn't a typical big man. Waterstradt, Redford Catholic Central's 6-foot-10 senior center, has the strength and soft touch inside to score, but he also can knock down shots from the perimeter. Waterstradt, who averaged 20.4 points and 14.5 rebounds this season, is captain of the All-West team. He has signed with Rutgers. "Probably his biggest asset is the way he runs up and down the floor," coach Rick Coratti said. "He's very agile for a guy his size. He's not just a big kid. He's a good athlete that does everything well." Last season, Waterstradt averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds, but he said he didn't feel like defenses began targeting him until this season. "Nobody knew who I was last year and they didn't think I could do anything, but I was out to prove them wrong this year," Waterstradt said. "My coaches noticed that I could shoot better than the normal big guy, so they worked with me so I could be a double threat scoring inside and outside. I also played defense on the perimeter for the first time and it forced me to become a more versatile player." |
