First Annual 2003
Detroit Invader Hockey Awards
Regular Season MVP: Gary Enos
Gary started in the beginner program in the 1999-2000 season with the Invaders and has become a folk hero for many Invaders. Averaging 2.35 points per game, Gary only seems to improve and accelerate his play at a rate that is unmatchable to anyone else on the team or in the league. With his 32 goals and 15 assists, Gary was ranked as the highest points earner in the Detroit Area. Besides Gary's supreme and dominating play, he is an outstanding teammate on the bench who leads by example and makes everyone on the team better for him just being on the ice. For the stats that Gary compiled this winter, he also won the following three offensive categories. For what Gary has contributed to the team, the regular season MVP will officially be named the Gary Enos Award for the 2004 Invaders Hockey Awards.
Leading Scorer: Gary Enos
Goal Scoring Leader: Gary Enos
Most Assists: Gary Enos
Play-off MVP: Chris Woolf
Notable: Steve Valiquette
Chris came to the Invaders in the 2002 draft and could have easily won the Regular Season MVP for his role he played with the Invaders. Chris held a 1.00 GAA during the play-offs. Not to mention Chriss 1.42 GAA for the regular season. Chris does not make the people on the ice look better; he is the reason why the Invaders won in the play-offs. Chriss performance as a rookie has also given him the Rookie of the Year Award.
Rookie of the Year Award: Chris Woolf
Notables: Steve Valiquette, Brian Guyot, Mark Moine, Mike Casmer, Al Harris
All these players played a key role in the Invaders' 21-2 record and all deserve recognition.
Best Defenseman: Brian Guyot
Notable: Entire Invaders' Defensive Squad
As the entire defense played an active role for the Invaders to be ranked in the top 4 in all defensive categories, Guyot was their fearless leader. Guyot received all the votes from his teammates with exception of one, he didnt vote for himself. Guyot was acquired in the 2002 fall draft and earned his spot on the team with his solid defensive play along with two goals in the championship game to give the Invaders their 3rd Championship.
Unsung Hero: Steve Valiquette
Steve is the player on the team that goes unnoticed. He does all the right things but never seems to get the recognition from the press. In the stat archive they note his name to be 'Seth' Valiquette. Steve elevated his play throughout the year. Steve was second on the team with ten assists and had seven goals in the regular season. Not to mention zero penalties for the year, which also earned him the Lady Bing award. He added three more goals including a game-winning goal during the play-offs. One spectator said, "He is the best player on the ice." That is not the best player on the Invaders but on the ice, that is the best player on two teams. However, Steve still found himself in Gary Enos and Chris Woolf's shadows. Invaders' management looks for Steve to be out of the unsung hero role and earn enough points to earn some offensive awards for next year.
Lady Bing Award: Steve Valiquette
Most Improved: John Gatti
Notables: Ken Schudt, Tom Watson, Jerry Stocking
Waking up at 4:30 in the morning to get ready and drive 30 minutes to the rink to be able to be on the ice at 6 am is how John earned this award. Did I mention that was not for a game but to do skating and endurance drills? Maybe the last 15 minutes they allow you to scrimmage. John made a big dedication to be a contributor to the Invader Organization the past two years. John has shown big strides from his beginner years and Invaders Management just signed Gatti to a long-term deal.
Iron Man Award: Jerry Stocking
Jerry is a rock on the team. Through all other commitments, Stocking made it to every game this past fall. This dedication has given Jerry the Iron Man Award for his dedication along with never being tired on the ice. At times the defense is looked upon to double shift a number of times and it never even seems to wind Jerry. If he does, he never complains and he never shows it. A true rock on the team.
Hansen Bros. Award: Lou Stoney
Notables: Berry Brothers, Mike Casmer
When Lou Stoney accepted his role as Caption, he took it seriously. He took the responsibility of questioning the referees when they missed a penalty, and then took the responsibility of enforcing those missed calls against the opposing players. In addition to his versatility on offense or defense, Lou compliments his skating ability and flash with a grittiness that is unmatched anywhere in the league. Lou is a true "foil-on-the-knuckles" bruiser and enforcing, often looking out for the finesse players on the team. Invaders management hopes for Lou to change his role in the coming year and actually score a goal.
Veteran Award: Dave Caragay
Notables: Gary Enos, Al Harris, Jerry Stocking, Anthony Ligi
Dave is what every team needs to succeed. Never complaining what position he plays, including if he is asked to play defense. Leading by example, Dave understands what it takes to win by being one of the hardest skaters on the ice. Dave knows when something needs to be said and when it doesn't. A voice in the locker room not over bearing but still heard. Everyone on the team enjoys and respects Dave's attendance.
Captain's Award: Anthony Ligi
Notables: Seth Vandermulen, John Gatti, Steve Valiquette
Besides being second on the team with 23 points for the regular season. Anthony has been one of the main sources for advice with lines, strategies (non-existing) and other team matters. As a first year captain, Anthony was there to assist me in letting me know when I should speak up and when I should not. And as most of the people who know myself, Lig needed to tell me to put a cork in it a few times. Due to Anthonys assistance and dedication to e-mail conversation about hockey, Anthony will be an official assistance for the coming season and will be wearing an A on his jersey.
Overall Comments:
Everyone on the Invaders played a special role this season and I would like to take the chance to say thanks to everyone from the Invaders Management. A 21-2 season is one that may not be duplicated. Everyones dedication to improving is impressive and everyone deserves to win an award this year. I hope everyone decides to return for the 2002-2003 season to put another notch in the Invaders Dynasty Story.
