Wicca
I could go on forever talking about what I think  this symbol means to me. Well, to enlighten those of you that think this is "the devil sign", (and yes there are people out there that think this) it's not. I can't even begin to tell you how many people have walked up to me in the hall at school or even on the street and asked me if it was the devil sign. Now I usually just blow them off, or calmly explain to those that are willing to listen, the true nature of the symbol and try to give as much clear and accurate information as possible; but before I used to be enraged by people's ignorance.
Well, then I realized that it's quite easy to mistake the pentacle (pentagram would be the star without the circle) for the more commonly seen as the devil sign star. ("goat head star") In which case the pentagram appears to be upside down; where instead of one point of the star on top, there are two. Some people say that the two points at the top are the horns, the two on the side are cheekbones, and the one at the bottom is a beard. I don't see that star as a symbol of the devil. I just see it as an upside down pentagram. For the most part I would consider them opposite sides of the same magic. Uright being positive, attractive and drawing energies while inverted would be negative, repelling and banishing engergies. But people can believe what they want to.
Now for the reason you actually clicked on this link. The five sided star or pentagram represents different things to different people. To me it represents the five elements of life: Fire, earth, air, water, and spirit. While the circle around the star in a pentacle represents the ever lasting cycle of birth, death and rebirth encompassed by the ever lasting love of Spirit. I've also heard some people tell me that the five points represent the five wounds Jesus suffered. I'm not so sure about the latter, but if that's what you wanna believe alrightly then. I've seen this star used for many Pagan and Wiccan religions. And most commonly the inverted (upside down) pentagram used by many Satanist. The inverted pentagram has been used for even longer though by ancient pagan groups as a symbol of high ranking in the coven. A second degree witch would obtain this symbol upon being granted the position of High Priestess/Priest.
So basically that's what the star means to me and many other educated people who tote the symbol. Disagree? Think there is something I left out?
E-mail me and we'll have a nice debate. I'm always up for a chat.
