emily
casey
maggie
amelia
it started in the summer of 2001... when emily powers was temporarily moving into casey walsh's basement. casey owned a set of poorly tuned drums that were crunched in the corner of his room & emily a sad little guitar, with no stickers. so they decided to make music, telling their epic tales of kangarays, racoons & aliens. unfortunatly the late night noise was too much for brother riley, so to the basement they went! of course it was dark & cold down there, but with the company of the furnace & washing machines came their best work.
after dinner on a late late school night in september of 2001 detergent decided to take the big step & make a recording. emily had a big ghetto 80's tape recorder in her backpack, & thought it might be a fun idea, & of course it was. out of that recording came "detergent: 45 minuites of crap". on it is 45 minuites of pure insanity. screaming & roaring, singing & laughing, even casey singing. beautiful.
from there detergent scored the second to last spot on the first ever youth owned records compilation. then played some shows & watched lots of horror movies in casey's basement eating bean burritos.
the year of 2002 brought many new changes for detergent. they played more shows, recorded more music, met more people & of course ate more bean burritos.
the summer of 2002 brought two new members of detergent, amelia granger on kickin bass & maggie sullivan on roarin guitar. with their powers combined they became... a full band. the possibilities are now endless.
that summer also brought the first ever youth owned records tour, which detergent was part of... or... most of detergent. emily & amelia embarked on a grueling 3 day tour of kalamazoo, bloomington & even chicago. maggie kicked out the jams in kalamazoo & the almightly chris wiltsee was kind enough of play drums on all three days. along the way many candy bars were eaten, banjos were played, traffic jams were met, birds flew, cows mooed... & music was played loudly.
inbetween the insanity of the summer emily was able to record & release an ep with the help of erik gustafson. detergent also played a handful of shows with the helpful drumming styles of elaine stranahan & steve hall... as casey was busy doing other things.
from there the songs became more frequent, the songs became more outragous & people started remembering the band name.
the future of 2003 & beyond shines brightly for detergent. not only with two upcomming compilations that they are participating in, but detergent is hopeful to record their own album. emily is also in the works of a new album, hopefully to be done in the spring. and what else? maybe to eat more bean burritos? amelia will marry trumpy? emily will run her own party store? maggie will party it up with sean connery? casey will save all dogs from evil sacs?
