Isle of Pines - New Caledonia
The reason Cap'n Cook christened these islands
is plain to see from miles off. Quite different from the flat atolls and volcanic peaks of most Pacific Islands, it's thought that New Caledonia was once attached to the Australian mainland. There the similarity ends, as the strong French influence is soon appreciated, along with the inflated prices!!
We were impressed with the squeeky white sand and unusual rock formations along the beaches. More like Thailand than anywhere.
In keeping with our global tour of penal colonies  [we are Australian after all] couldn't resist a walk to another "hotel" for anti-revolutionaries
Had intended to spend only a couple of days here then push on to Sydney. The passage from Fiji had been our best ever, with only a couple of hours of motoring in mainly SE winds, but good things don't last, and the weather turned nasty so there was no option but to head for Noumea, check in, and wait!
