NOUMEA - NEW CALEDONIA
We're so pleased the weather forced us to make the run up to Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia, and check in. The harbour is huge and well protected. In fact most of the US fleet sheltered here during WW2. Above is the entrance seen from outside, and below looking the other way! Destiny is anchored outside the breakwater to the right of the cathederal towers. We are now experienced "grotties" and avoid marinas like the plague! We can sniff cheapies and freebies a mile off and never pass a dumpster without looking in!!!
Noumea is a clean vibrant cosmopolitan town far removed from similar in Fiji and Tonga which are definitely 3rd World. The French influence is very strong- as reflected in the prices!
Jude was fascinated by the "luxurious" portable latrines on just about every street corner, but as all the instructions are in French, was teriffied she'd be locked in for life for pressing the wrong one! Duck was amazed that the police were still offering accommodation !
Between the Isle of Pines and Noumea we'd anchored overnight in Baie du Prosy and found South African mates on Golden Sovereign lurking there! We met Clive, Ann-Marie, Shaun and Clare in Cape Town, and had last seen them at a barbecue in Panama. Great to catch up and compare Pacific horror stories and hang out at the market.  After a few days we found what seemed to be a "perfect" weather window for the last passage of our journey... of course it was too good to be true!
