MARQUESAS - NIKU HIVA
Bay Anaho
Niku Hiva has heaps of great sacred sites and treks through valleys and mountains.
Jude fancied this tiki, "Tangorama" god of the seas.
We did a long trek to an ancient site with the "Britts" escorted by a friendly local who transported us on his poor horse!
Below: The enchanted island of Oa Puo.
We followed in the footsteps of Herman Melville, and tried to identify the gorges and valleys he'd described in his famous book Typee, but they all looked the same to us. Neither could we relate to the blood thirsty cannibals he'd encountered. All the Marquesans we met were friendly and didn't view us as breakfast.
In Bay Anaho above we spent several nights with a helpful French couple from Tahiti on Le Croque, and trekked to the next village with a pommie from an Oyster we'd seen a couple of times. We swam with Manta Rays, but didn't feel comfortable in the murky water.
In the Bay of the Controller we spent a night with "Britt" before returning to Niku Hiva to check out.
