Jude steers her out past Barrenjoey light at 9.15am on Wed 14th Feb 2001, [Valentines Day!] Under grey skies, 15 knots of wind from the South, and very lumpy seas, we are escorted by a couple of sinister looking fins for a couple of hundred metres! We have the main up, and a poled out headsail, and make between 5.5 and 6 knots through the water, 7.5 over the ground!
When the wind built to 20 knots we found this a better configuration! The autohelm coped well even though the wind was right up our arse, and the swells were irregular! Made 12 knots surfing down waves, digging big holes in the ocean! We loved it and so did Destiny! The radar and auto helm took all the stress out of night sailing, and we were snug in our cozy shed!
After giving me a lecture on always wearing my harness/lifejacket when leaving the cockpit in these conditions, Duck then risked life and limb to get this shot for YOU! There were a couple of dolphins playing in the bow wave too, great sail, great feeling, loved it!
