On route from Gove to Darwin there's a shortcut through a natural narrow gap between two islands about 50 metres wide and 1 K long, affectionately known as the "hole in the wall". The current rushes through so it's important to time your passage when the tide is either slack, or at least going in the same direction!
We left Gove at 7am to ensure we covered the 45nm distance by 3.00pm. Had great sailing and got there two hours early! A french yacht followed us from Gove because they thought we knew what we were doing.
Duck climbed the mast to check the rip which didn't look too bad, so we decided to keep right on going, and WHOOSHKA, we shot through at 10 knots over the ground, and got spat out the other side in a flurry of whirlpools! YESS. LETS DO THAT AGAIN! |
