RICHARDS BAY
This is the "Newcastle" of Africa. We're moored in the small boat harbour at Tuzi Gazi, far away from the coal giants, but we still get covered in coal dust when the wind is from the SW [and we'd just got rid of the red from Gove!] Destiny's in a top spot next to a wide quay, with shore power and water all free for a month! The harbour is steadily filling up so we now have a French couple with "Yvonne B" and Patrick on "Eagle Dancer" rafted up outside us. Pat and Louie who we first met in Yamba are here with "Aragon" heading home to Gordon's Bay in the Cape, and Wolfgang on the 80ft "Pegasus" has just arrived and started re-arranging everyone! Two other members of the Adams Family, David from Geelong on "Friction" and new arrivals Paul and Kaye on the 65fter who saw us of at Darwin Sailing Club. Peter and Susan on "Waxwing" aren't far behind. There were a great bunch here when we arrived. Paul the local who hosts great parties on "Andrea Helena" with 2 park benches on the foredeck, Ted the gregarious Dane with the Sydney-born wife pon "Kaylea" Berger on the historic Belgian ketch "Victoria" with a bunch of teenage crew, Peter the lone POM with furler problems, and Hans

the mad Nazi on "Brandenburg" "Ja we lost both wars.... but only by a little bit!" to name a few. "Shaya Moya" the fast cat. with Barry and Penny DeLacy who we met in Cocos arrived home last week after an 18 month circumnavigation, and invited us to dinner in their gorgeous home overlooking the golf course. We checked it out on our trusty rustys and played a round as a warm up to the big one at Durban Country Club in a couple of weeks time. Interesting little course. Had to avoid the water holes which are inhabited by crocs and hippos, and some curious spectators who took a fancy to our golf balls. The match followed recent trends with Jude racing to a 3 hole lead, then Duck hitting form and Jude fading resulting in a tied match!

Umfolozi Game Park, home of the White Rhino is only an hour's drive away, so we rented a car and spent a fabulous couple of days there. Check out the page. With the exchange rate at A$1 =R5, we're making the most of our "rich" status, and have ordered a working headsail as Jude's Birthday present. The sailmaker assures us he's used to gift wrapping them! On the negative side, there's a sinister feeling of insecurity, and we're getting stiff necks from constantly looking over our shoulders!
