REUNION
Reunion is french. If you don't speak french, you have a hard time! Pugeots, Renaults and Citroens belt along on the right-hand side of the road, and everything is imported at French Franc prices!! Needless to say, we bought as little as possible, and with Big Macs the equivalent of A$10, ate in! Duck's idea of provisioning was a french loaf [warm and crispy] and a slab of the local Bourbon brew! The small boat harbour is a favourite
spot for french cruisers who often leave their boats for long periods. As you see it's pretty crowded with no alternative but to raft up 3 and 4 abreast, but hell it's free and there's plenty of water! In this pic, Destiny's about an inch from my chin.
Many of the long-timers working in Reunion
whilst fixing up their boats have turned a shed next to the harbour-
masters office into a bar/internet club where we met most nights. Duck  arguing with a Brazilian pacifist in broken English, while Jude accessed the internet on the mezzanine floor!
The bus network is great so we took a trip to the old colonial capital St Dennis with it's street cafes and markets, and another to the cirque de Cilaos in the mountainous interior.
The cirque was formed by the collapse of the old volcano caldera. The bus trip up the narrow winding road [400 corners] was hair-raising, a real white knuckles job, with eyes shut as we swung dangerously close to the edges, and raced through tunnels with only an inch to spare each side!
Got a lift down with Andre, a visiting mountaineer from Brittainy, who was still on a high after climbing to the summit! After that, we weren't in the least concerned about crossing a mere ocean!
