Operation Rescue Crash!
For the month of November, the original month that Voice's Carry aired, the Angsty Artists at Fan Forum decided that we should make CrAsh fans voices heard. So we created a petition, Operation Rescue CrAsh and somewhere in the crazy obsessed with CrAsh depths of my mind, I came up with this idea. To make a ton of little bags with rings in them, representative of the bag that Craig held the ring he proposed to Ashley with, and attach to those a strip of paper containing a title of one of the Angsty Artist threads we have over at the fan forum. This is what the bags ended up looking like:
I also asked a series of questions in the AA thread and put the answers together.
I put all of it in a package and sent it off to the Degrassi producers in mid November and just recently we received recognition from Stephen Stohn:
"I got a great Crash package in the mail a while back with 60 reasons for Craig and Ashley to be together, including 60 individually wrapped reasons--which we've hung up on the wall leading to the studio and the cafeteria so all the writers and actors can check them out!!"
Following is the written part that I sent along with the package.
To Whom It May Concern,
This is a project put together by fans of the Craig and Ashley relationship from the Degrassi board at fanforum.com, in order to make known that we are standing by the couple and would like to see more of their story. Enclosed in this package is 64 bags, one for each thread the fans (The Angsty Artists) have on the forum, with plastic rings and a slip of paper with one of our thread titles along with a quote from fans that have signed the petition we created for our CrAsh (found at this address: http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/CrAsh). The bags are intended to be reminiscent of how Craig kept the ring he proposed to Ashley with in Voices Carry; the episode originally aired in November, thus the reason we are sending it now. Granted, we are not sure what your plans are for the future, but please keep the Craig/Ashley relationship in mind. Many fans feel that they were not given proper closure, especially given the gravity of their history and love. Their relationship has meant a lot to us, and what follows is a series of testimonies from the fans that frequent the Angsty Artists thread at Fan Forum.
Summarize in one word, in any language, how you would describe CrAsh's love:
Agape which is Greek and is the word used to describe "love in it's purest form" and a selfless love. Now, I don't think that CrAsh has always had this kind of love, obviously s3 and parts of s4 being examples, but I think that ultimately they love each other enough in this way to give the other up even if that's not what they themselves want, if they thought that is what would make the other happy (good examples would be Craig at the end of VC and in a weird way Ash in GDTR/Venus).
-Diana, CA, U.S.
Unconditional. Its a pretty simple word but I think it fits Crash because their love had no restrictions. Even when they are apart there is still that deep caring for the other, its everlasting. When they broke up I don't think either of them took it as a simple break up that will happen and has happened in their lives before. They were each others best friends and friends that close to you never leave your heart. You move on from break ups but you don't get over unconditional love.
-Kathy, VA, U.S.
Season. Crash is a season. Each time around they are continuing a destined cycle but it's different every time. Some things remain the same; the most basic lessons they've learned, personality traits, and mutual attraction. They just build up off of that. Sometimes it's hot, sometimes it's cold. But the seasons always return.
-Nicole, MN, U.S.
Infinite: their love is never-ending. Even when they're not together (technically), you always get the feeling it will eventually come back to them. Their love is limitless/endless.
Carli, CA, U.S.
Complex: They are unlike any high school couple on Degrassi, facing things some adults couldn't face (cheating, trust issues, the death of a loved one). They express themselves candidly, through song or through conversations. Their flaws are exposed, but they care about each other regardless. There's so many emotions that they can't confront them all the time, but they want to and they try to. The complexity adds to the intensity, an intense love that neither knows how to deal with (SISOSIG, GDTR) but that keeps burning. Of course, the other parties that come in (Jimmy, Ellie, Manny) make CrAsh more complex, hopefully for the better. A very layered couple.
-Nikki, MD, U.S.
Genuine-Which by definition means real; sincerely felt; candid, honest and open in relationships with others. And I believe that in a nutshell that describes Crash. No matter what happened, we always knew they had something real that meant a whole lot to the both of them. It required them let themselves out on a limb to live something that was real love for the first time.
-Ria, MN, U.S.
My word for Crash (and how suitable for an Ashley relationship) is ecstacy! While it's sometimes used to describe bliss or delight, the word also describes an overwhelming emotion or a sudden, intense feeling. Intense, overwhelming, elation, powerful...I think all of these words are suitable when describing Crash. It is not always happy and positive, but their relationship is filled with emotion and elevated sensations. Their highs are extremely high and their lows are extremely low. I think that's what makes Crash so unique and sets them apart from other TV couples. I know it's what I love most about them. Their feelings for each other are almost overpowering, but it all comes down to how much they love each other.
-Jen, BC, CA
Sincero. Meaning sincere in Spanish, I think it's the perfect word to describe CrAsh's love. They have that sincere, honest, genuine kind of love for each other, which was especially evident in season 4. Despite the things that went wrong the season before (ie. Craig's manwhoreness), they were able to put those things behind and try to work it out because what they really wanted was each other, and they were finally ready for that. They sincerely loved each other, wanted to be together, and be there for each other through those ups and downs.
-Joa, NY, U.S.
What has the Craig and Ashley relationship meant to you?
The CrAsh relationship means a lot to me because Jake and Melissa bring a nice, effortless chemistry that makes you root for them. Craig and Ashley, as characters, fight for one another and fight each other, which I think is so realistic and touching. Degrassi as a show means a lot to me, because it's probably the most authentic teen show on (well, when it's good), and CrAsh stands apart because they not only deal with regular teenage relationship stuff (sex), but things that ultimately help them mature (VC, Secret). They use each other to grow and it's great.
-Nikki
The Craig and Ashley relationship is the reason I continued watching the show after one episode. I felt like they had the most real, genuine and mature relationship on the show. They weren't perfect, but they always found a way to make it work. Jake and Melissa are fantastic actors and their chemistry onscreen is undeniable. Seeing two people in love (onscreen) is a beautiful thing to watch; I wish I could see more of it.
-Carli
Their relationship means a lot to me because it was one of the few fictitious love stories that was very real in that it wasn't all fluffyness and a smooth ride. They had bumps, they had issues, they had heartbreak. There were moments that I felt like I hated either one of them, but ultimately I get over that and continue to root for them because it was very clear and undeniable that they really did genuinely love each other. And this relationship means a lot to me because of that reason, because no matter what, there's always that love that they shared that can't be taken away. And it was a beautiful love story.
-Diana
Whenever Craig and Ashley are on the screen together, I know that something is going to happen. They are unpredictable and they battle some of their hardest issues together. I get a sense of realism and honesty when it comes to these two. They've both had their bad moments but they've also had a subtle sweetness to them, especially during their smiley kisses. They've also helped to teach other some tough lessons (like RRHS).
-Nicole
I just think it's really nice to see two people that really care about each other despite whatever troubles they may be facing. They stand by each other and seem to put the other before themselves. Their relationship isn't perfect, but that's what makes it great... it's what makes it real to me.
-Joa
Did you take any personal lessons from it?
I wouldn't say I take anything personal from them. They're a TV couple and I love watching them, but I think the only thing I've taken from it is that you should have a foundation of friendship to make a relationship last, I guess. But my mom also told me that so....
-Nikki
They are a TV couple, so no I don't really think I've taken any personal lessons from their relationship. I don't think TV couples have the same standards as couples do in real life. TV couples tend to get away with a lot more...things I would never stand for. If I've learned anything, it's that guys are pigs
-Carli
I actually do have something that I maybe didn't learn persay, but it made me rethink my position on it: forgiveness. It's kind of odd to me when I really think about it that I ship a couple in which there was infidelity because I am extremely passionate about my hatred for that abomination. The fact that Ash could essentially forgive and forget was very mind boggling to me, but because she was able to their relationship was taken to a much greater level. So, overall, because of CrAsh's relationship I have reconsidered how I would approach situations in which I must be forgiving.
-Diana
I wouldn't say I learned anything from them but I am reminded that people can be unintentionally cruel and self absorbed, but that's not the only moment that defines them. Their relationship had so many layers to it and the two characters remind me of all the parts that make a person who they are. We all have faults and as long as someone is trying, they shouldn't give up on an obvious love.
-Nicole
And despite them being a tv relationship, seeing CrAsh together reminds me that real love isn't perfect, it has its ups and downs, and time doesn't erase what was so real. There are way too many unrealistic relationships portrayed on tv, so its really refreshing to see a couple like CrAsh.
-Joa
Will any of that change if their relationship remains the way it was left in Venus?
No, like the saying goes, people come into our lives for a reason. Craig nor Ash have made it seem like they don't want the other in their life. Ash goes to find him in HF, and Craig waits for her all summer and doesn't badmouth her for all of season five. I'm sure the hurt is there, but sometimes you care enough to forgive and realize that the other person is too significant to drop. No matter what happens, Ash will be the first person Craig said "I love you" to and meant it, and Ashley gave Craig her virginity and her heart. So Venus Smeenus.
-Nikki
While I don't appreciate what the writers did to Ashley (having her break up with Craig through e-mail and getting with another guy at the same time), I would much rather the writers leave it at that than completely ruin CrAsh. Right now, the Ashley I see onscreen is unrecognizable. She is nothing like the Ashley I have seen and loved for so long. I really don't know what's going on and if she were to stay this way, I don't think I'd like to see her with Craig. If CrAsh never get back together, I'd at least like the writers to give them some sort of closure because I don't think they've been treated fairly.
-Carli
Ultimately, if we are stuck with the Venus ending then it doesn't take away what CrAsh has meant to me. I still think they were the best relationship on that show no matter their ending. However, the ending does not do them justice and it would benefit the show for that relationship to be resolved in a better way.
-Diana
Nah, Venus is just another stepping stone in the Craig and Ashley saga. It just opens up another storyline for them. Maybe Venus is the start of what RRHS was for Craig.
-Nicole
Even if their relationship remains the same way as it was left in Venus, it doesn't change what happened. It doesn't change that what they had was real. It doesn't change what they did for each other. Time doesn't change the past.
-Joa
Why do you think Craig and Ashley are best suited for each other over other people?
I think CrAsh are best suited for one another for several reasons. One being they would never try to change the other. They love one another for who they are and not who they wish the other was. Two, they know each other better than any two people on the show. If Ashley acted and dressed the way she has so far this season, Craig would call her on it (unlike another certain person). He knows that's not her. Three, they never give up on each other and they forgive. Ashley knew she loved Craig and he was the one for her, so she forgave him for the "momentary lapse in judgment." If written properly, Craig should forgive Ashley for leaving and the whole "break up." How many teenagers would stay in a relationship with someone who was bipolar and help the other through it? Seriously, how many people would have stuck by the other's side? Probably not too many, but Ashley did. While Craig and Ashley had a physical relationship, it was not based purely on sex. They were so much more than that. They connected on an emotional and intellectual level. They have a lot of things in common, but not so much that they would get bored with one another. Opposites do not attract and that's a scientific fact. Look for the research, it's out there! Plus, do any other two people on the show look that good together?!
-Carli
He puts her in a very high regard, and its so great because he doesn't even put her on a pedestal. He knows that she is dramatic, emotional and stubborn but he just goes with it. The reason he is able to not hold it against her is because he understands why she is the way she is.
I think Nicole just mentioned something about them teaching each other lessons. So I'd really love to see Craig teach Ashley one like she taught him one of the most important ones of his life (to make every word you say to someone mean something honest and make it count). If Ashley learned that Craig doesn't hold the break up against her but still deeply cares for her feelings then she'd probably learn a lot. If Crellie got together I'd imagine Ellie wanting to keep it from Ash but Craig being uncomfortable with that because he feels uncomfortable keeping things from her because he can't stand hurting her.
I think Ashley has everything she needs and is looking for in life in Craig. While she has no clue who she really is he knows exactly what he wants in life so I think she admires that quality in him (his identity). Plus he knows who she is better then she does so thats a huge reason they are fit for each other, whenever she starts to feel really lost he can help her find her way. Also another thing which I think is really cute is that neither of them have a very definite sense of belonging (Craig with his family, Ashley always wanting to get away and changing her lifestyle) but they never really had to worry about that when they were together because they simply belonged together.
-Kathy
In the beginning when we got our hints of the CrAsh that was to come... and by DIB, they made sense gravitating towards each other considering what each was going through that season (Paige's clique, etc/Ashley and Albert/Craig). But it was so much more than just that, because once they were together, they just made sense. They seemed to grow together, as people, despite everything that was thrown their way. Somehow, together or apart, they always seemed to be at pretty much the same points in their lives. With each other, they never have to be something they are not... they are just Craig and Ashley - two people that belong together.
-Joa
They both appreciate each other's passions, and are supportive. I haven't seen Craig really take an interest in Manny's acting besides going to the premiere (he could've shown up for her variety show), nor have I seen Craig take an interest in Ellie's journalism ambitions. Of course, both Manny and Ellie have lent support to Craig's musical dreams. But so has Ash, and Craig supported her GM food petition, appreciated her songwriting skills, and eventually her dream to go to England. It's more equal.
-Nikki
I think also that Craig and Ashley are the only people for each other that we've seen that have this certain effect on the other. I haven't seen any other pairing for either of them that has consistently shown them so enamored and deliriously happy (VC is a wonderful example of this). And yes, I think they understand each other and connect on a level that is actually more implicit. I don't think either of them go (or went) around saying "He/She gets me, it's fate!" Or something cheesy like that. They both know they have a connection, but they don't exploit it.
-Diana
What is your personal ideal way for Craig and Ashley's story to end (at least when the show ends)?
I'm assuming the show will end soon, so I don't think they should be married or anything like that. They're still too young for marriage, in my opinion. They do not even have to be a couple in the end for me to be satisfied. All I would like to see is that they realize they each still have feelings for the other...significant feelings. I want them to talk about everything that has happened since Ashley left for Europe. They need everything out in the open in order to get past it all. Once everything is all out on the table, I think they'd realize their time wasted with other people. I just want to see them happy in the end, and yes I do think the best way for that is for them to be together since that has always been their happiest in the past.
-Carli
I don't think Degrassi likes to end on any major characters as a couple, so I'm not expecting that. I would like some strong suggestions that they could take it there. I wouldn't mind a huge blow out where all their insecurities and hurt comes up. After they cool down, I'd like them to talk. Maybe it could end on one of them saying, "I'd do it all again just for those moments in the hotel with you." Something that hints that they aren't going to give up yet.
-Nicole
Well, I think it's too soon to have them be SO serious again. I'd want them to be friends, with the suggestion that it will turn into something more later. I imagine Craig will be on the road to getting healthy again, and couldn't function in a relationship at the end of this season. They could bump into each other, Ashley can ask how he is, and Craig can tell her how he is. Then, that would lead to talk of Ali, England, and hopefully Ash saying that her and Jimmy didn't work out. They share a dance at a graduation party, maybe a kiss they feel ashamed about, and Craig asks her to come to the airport with him. He looks around for her that day, but doesn't see her. She catches him at the last minute, nervously hugs him, and they kiss again. Without saying anything, they smile and Craig boards the plane. That way, they can pick up CrAsh a year from now, five years, ten years, whenever. Just a happy, ambiguous ending.
-Nikki
Well, I'm not sure when the entire series is going to come to an end, but either way the idealist romantic in me would love to have CrAsh be together again (no matter what stage they are in their relationship, i.e. just beginning again, etc.). However, the realist in me and the part that knows that Degrassi tends to not end up with couples together (what's up with that anyway?) just wants something that gives them better closure from what went down in GDTR and Venus. Also to acknowledge how much they mean to each other and that they were the most significant relationship in the others life; and perhaps also some scenes that show that the attraction/feelings are not gone. I'd definately like their history on the show to end with at least a hint or possibility that they will rekindle something, even though we CrAsh fans know that anyway.
-Diana
I'd want a huge blow out where Craig tells Ashley how hurt he was when she left, maybe point out about how she is fooling everyone but him with her chameleon act and I'd want Ashley to explain her side and apologize (all during the fight). Then Craig will storm off and once he cools down he goes to apologize to her, but they end up making out. THEN the next day they could share a dance while talking about how much they missed each other and thought about them while in London/Vancouver. Their last scene will be a "goodbye...for now" one where most likely Craig will leave for awhile, but they promise each other that this time they'll write or whatever and stay in each others lives for good.
-Kathy
***
In my opinion, Craig and Ashley were the only true and great love story on the show of the younger couples. In season 2, I saw two people who were intrigued by each other and had genuine feelings that they weren't quite sure how to define yet; the beginning of something very sweet and special. In season 3, I saw two people who were in a sort of crossroads of how they felt about each other and what their relationship meant to them. They had to go through a trial to really figure out what love is and by RRHS, they found it. In season 4, I saw two people who were very much in love. They were happy, scared, sad, elated, nervous, relieved, enamored, open, warm, supportive, accepting, stubborn, and by the end, heartbroken. But they were all of these things together.
They represented a genuine love that eventually contained all the elements that in my opinion are essential: loving one another for who they are, friendship, romance, respect, trust, forgiveness, and above all love.
My favorite quote about love comes from the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13, which I think CrAsh reflected as their relationship progressed, and given the chance, they can possess all the qualities listed:
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, and it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.
And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.
One thing that their relationship has not been is perfect. They've had some pretty perfect moments (as Ashley herself stated in VC) but by no means has their relationship been perfect and that's a good thing! They had/have to work on their relationship and that is what love is all about! If it was easy, then why isn't everyone in love? If love was easy it would take away the specialness of finding "the one" that you're willing to fight to be with, and I think that Craig and Ashley are that for each other. They had tired of the fight for the moment, but they'll get it back again. The only reason that they remain apart is because they each believe that the other is happy and they are at a point where that's enough. And that's another important part of love: being selfless enough to let your loved one walk away if it is truly the best thing for them.
If their story is over, then I would be satisfied with and grateful for what I got. However, I do not believe it is over and I think that given the chance, they will find their way back to each other and continue to fight for and work on their love. ~Diana
We understand that there are other fanbases that you must consider as well. However, it is quite clear which relationship was most meaningful for both of these characters and we hope that you honor that relationship that you have created. While it would be nice to see another reunion, again, all wed really like to see is an acknowledgement of and proper closure to the great love story you have created for them. Thank you.
Sincerely,

Because we can't hardly wait to see Greg and Smashley disappear!
Watching yet another season without Crash will be a tragic mistake, and will probably upset most of us. -Jenn
Because like Ashley, we were all pretending it was Craig!
They really only make sense with each other -Diana
Because you can't fight fate forever.
They've been through so much together, yet they always come back together. They are inevitable. They are real. Ashley
Because their looks of love say everything
I think they understand each other and connect on a level that is actually more implicit. They both know they have a connection, but they don't exploit it. -Diana
Because she was the first big fan to cheer him on.
They both appreciate each other's passions, and are supportive. -Nikki
