I was assigned to the 498th Combat Support Battalion, when news of this young man's death went through the company via the Grave's Registration detachment that was placed in my unit.
His friends would have noted him as a nice person, great to have fun with.
The incident that claimed SPC Middletons' life was noted to be the fault of an Apache Commander, when in fact , it was the ground force commander, of which outranked the Apache commander that gave the order to fire.
I know this as I was there and can tell this story.
I saw the footage from the Apache and heard the command given by the ground forces commander, of which I recognized. Placing blame on the Apache commander was the WRONG thing to do, as fault should have lied with the ground forces commander, a colonel.
The Apache commander was a major, only following orders.
To those that suffer from the Gulf War syndrome, gods' speed in recovery, and if that is not possible, may god find
mercy, and open his arms to you, for you have earned your place there in heaven.
