| The Type 88 155mm self-propelled howitzer may well be one of the most potent weapons in the PLA inventory. Known as the PLZ-45 by Norinco, the Type 88 combines a very modified Type 83 SPA chassis with the powerful 45-caliber WA 021 155mm howitzer. In a surprising 1997 victory for the PRC, this howitzer was selected over both US and european guns for purchase by Kuwait. This sale was a particularly telling assessment of the howitzer's capbilities since the Kuwaiti Army has the budget to purchase nearly whatever it wants. A battalion of howitzers were delivered to the Kuwaitis along with a full package of support, command and control, forward observer, and radar vehicles. In 2001 the Kuwaitis ordered an additional 74 guns. Secondary armament is a 12.7mm W-85 AAMG. Also onboard is a NBC protective system, explosion detection and fire surpression system.
