| For several years defense analysts such as Jane's have projected the development of an 8X8 version of the WZ551 infantry fighting vehicle. In June of '01 I came accross this picture on the internet of a 122mm SP howitzer variant. This vehicle apprears to mount the standard Type 83 122mm D-30 clone howitzer also seen on the Type 89 SPA and the Type 85 SPA. The chassis is of entirely new design, with some features of the WZ551 but heavily modified. I suspect that this 8x8 version was developed several years ago, evaluated, and found to be unsatisfactory. Among other indicators this is based on the use of an old Type 54 AAMG on this prototype. I believe that the new 6x6 120mm SP Mortar is the follow-on to this vehicle, developed when the 8x8 122mm version was found to be unsuitable. -Desperado 6 |
