A MESSAGE FROM...
  OUR WORSHIPFUL MASTER...

Brethren,
I want to extend my sincere appreciation to Senior Warden, Gene Major, for the out-standing job he did as 'Acting Master' for the month of July.   I also want to thank all of you for your prayers during the recent loss of our Grandson, Austin Glen Earwood.   While we were in Geogia awaiting the birth of our Granddaughter, we received word from our oldest daughter who had just returned from a six-month check that her baby had died.   We returned to Memphis, and held a grave side service.   A Brother reminded me, that King Solomon had a similar experience.   II Samuel 12:19-21 recites a problem much as we faced, and if you read it, you can understand the situation in which we found ourselves.   The great news is, meanwhile back in Georgia, our daughter-in-law gave birth to a healthy girl, Abigail Grace Nichols.   Upon traveling eastwardly, back to Georgia, to see our newest grandchild, my wife and I felt the extremes of emotions!   The prayers, thoughts, visits, phone calls and 'Brotherhood' from all of you never meant so much before!   I am proud to be a Mason, and thankful for MY Lodge, DeSoto #299.
I understand that everyone had a great time at the annual picnic; Brother Cherry received an excellent First Degree, and has been studying hard hoping to be ready within the 28 days for his Second Degree.   The By-Laws Committee has completed preliminary revisions which will be ready for presentation at the September Stated Meeting for discussion.   If you have access to the web, let us know and we can get you the preliminary set for your thoughts and ideas.   If you think of something that should be included or changed in our present by-laws, contact the Secretary with your comments, so he can get them to the committee.   If you are not active, you truly are missing an exciting time within the History of the Lodge!

                                                                                               Faternally,
                                                                                               Jim Nichols, WM

Gentle, gracious, and wise, its mission is to form mankind into a great redemptive brotherhood, a league of noble and free men enlisted in the radiant enterprise of working out in time, the love and will of the Eternal.

Freemasonry has many definitions for many men.   Our English brethren define it as "a system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols.   "Certainly it is a course of moral instruction which employs both allegories and symbols to impart the truth of its rich lessons.   The word allegory is generally understood to mean that it "represents by suggestive resemblance."   The symbol is "a visible sign or representation of an idea."
Perhaps the best modern definition of Freemasonry is to be found in the writings of Brother C.C. Hunt, of Iowa, couched in these words, "Freemasonry is an organized society of men symbolically applying the principles of operative Masonry and architecture to the science and art of character building."   This is an adequate definition and serves to set our fraternity apart from other organizations which teach a system of morality.
