| Lt Desmond Chambers |
| History: Desmond Gabriel Rene Chambers was born to musician Charles Rene Chambers and his wife Nicolette in New Orleans, LA on March 3,1896. He would turn out to be the eldest of 3 children, all boys. His father Charles was known around the New Orleans area for his incredible trumpet playing. He and a few others in the area had begun experimenting with a new form of music coming out of Dixieland, that they called jazz. Desmonds mother, who was half-white by her father, was blessed with an angelic voice and often joined her husband on stage. Because of her appearance, they also were able to often book and play venues normally closed to blacks of the time. Early in his life Desmond was introduced to music. Desmond joined his parents on stage at age 4 and has been there ever since. His parents forced him to learn several different instruments, including the piano, sax, bass and finally guitar. It would be the guitar that Desmond would fall in love with. He would spend countless hours playing. He studied first with his father then with other performers learning, classical and Spanish styles. Finally, he played solo with his own group in a Bourbon street nightclub. He parents couldnt have been prouder. Unfortunately the good times were short-lived. A few weeks after the performance, Charles was lynched in a nearby town. The family had been there to play a local festival and the locals didnt appreciate a nigger marrying a white woman. Desmond and his mother tried desperately to save Charles to no avail. Desmond was beaten unconscious. Desmond never forgot one lesson he learned that night. As the men strung his father up, calling him all kinds of things, he never showed them fear. He never gave in to their taunts. He maintained the dignity hed lived his life with. Nicolette, Desmonds mother, never quite recovered. Her former joyful personality was gone along with her love. She took to the stage no more. She only ventured into the clubs the used to play to see Desmond or his brothers play. Her beauty still attracted attention, but no one could replace her beloved Charles. Desmond would later recall that time as the worst in his life. He felt as if he was watching her die slowly. Desmond devoted much of his time to cheering her and seemed to succeed. In time she became his manager, booking him along with friend Louis Armstrong to gigs all over the city. Desmond always possessed a friendly outgoing personality and while playing, he discovered something elsewomen. He dated and dallied, chased and was chased. Women began to frequent the clubs he played as much to see the hazel eyed Chambers as to hear the music. Not that Desmond was complaining, he loved every minute of it. Women after all were Gods greatest gift after music of course. Despite his free lifestyle, Desmond never lied to the women he was with and even fell in love a time or two. He took his heartaches like we all do and bounced right back. Life, it seemed, had given him a fairly good hand after all. |
